If you haven’t been following the UK COVID enquiry you must catch-up. The discourse of embedding research into clinical practice with available research infrastructure is vital. Funding support for #ClinicalTrialNetworks & #ClinicalResearchNurses is important!

This week Ganesh and I gave evidence about the report we had written for the @covidinquiryuk. Our report can be found at covid19.public-inquiry.uk/documents/inq0… For those that won't read a >100 page report (you should!), I thought I'd highlight some of our lessons learned/recommendations. 1/6

Thank you to the many thousands of people across the whole of the NHS & social care who helped deliver the care during the pandemic. Has been a strange and difficult day. But felt it was important to give witness to some small part of the enormity of the challenge we all faced.

@LachieMiles Hmmm… they ought to talk to all the research coordinators who are left with ‘project custodianship’ long after the trainee has rotated out. As for: “Ensuring that trainees have a constructive and satisfying research experience is critical”… all I can say is, we try.

As someone who dabbles in research from time to time, this is becoming a wicked problem. The medical literature is overwhelmed with relatively small, single centre studies that are difficult to replicate. Mandatory trainee research projects make this situation worse.
Rhea Liang@LiangRhea

Q: How useful are mandated research projects in specialty medical training? A: Not very. Our qualitative study of 7 medical colleges shows positive experiences rely on luck rather than intentionally structured learning. Why are we still doing this? #MedEd bmcmededuc.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…

Kevin is one of the smartest, most considered people I have ever met. His Covid inquiry testimony here:
Prof. Christina Pagel - @chrischirp.bsky.social@chrischirp

Prof @Kevin_Fong giving the most devastating and moving testimony to the Covid Inquiry of visiting hospital intensive care units at the height of the second wave in late Dec 2020. The unimaginable scale of death, the trauma, the loss of hope. Please watch this 2min clip.

Love this trial. Do you know how happy this will make ICU nurses? No more chasing the >4.5mEq/L target post cardiac surgery. Threshold of >3.6mEq/L is ok for patients, more cost effective and makes nurses happy. Win! Win! Win!

@NicStraiton Great article. Why have I commenced my PhD studies through Melbourne Medical school @CritCareUniMelb ? Because multidisciplinary support is what I need. Nurse-led research, by a clinician nurse researcher, outside a nursing faculty. Nurses can study outside their lane.
