Jesus was obedient unto death. That phrase, straight from Philippians 2:8, captures the breathtaking depth of His humility. The eternal Son, who had every right to command legions of angels and rule unchallenged, chose instead the path of perfect obedience. He submitted to the Father’s will all the way to the cross, which included betrayal by a friend, false accusations, brutal scourging, public humiliation, and the most shameful death Rome could devise. “And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:5-8) This wasn’t reluctant compliance. It was willing, joyful obedience born of love. A love for the Father and for us. At every step He could have stopped it. In Gethsemane He prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). He remained silent before His accusers. He carried His own cross. He forgave the very people driving the nails. Obedience unto death. The proud mock this because it exposes their own disobedience and insecurity. They can’t imagine yielding control so completely. To them, strength means dominating others, protecting their reputation, and never appearing weak. Jesus’ example shatters that illusion. True strength looks like surrender to God. Real security looks like trust even when it costs us everything. The insecure hide behind pride precisely because they sense how costly this kind of obedience would be for them. It would require admitting they aren’t really in control of their spiritual lives. It would require repenting of self-worship. It would required dying to the desire for human applause. Jesus didn’t just model humility. His obedience unto death secured our salvation, defeated sin and death, and now stands as the ultimate rebuke to every proud heart. The cross is both judgment on pride and the invitation to lay it down. Because He was obedient unto death, God highly exalted Him: “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow…” (Philippians 2:9-11) The same path is open to us. Humble yourself under God’s mighty hand, obey even when it’s hard, and He will lift you up in due time (1 Peter 5:6). This is the kind of King worth following, the One whose obedience unto death sets the captive free from the chains of pride. Those who mock Him are ultimately mocking the only path that leads to real life. Pray for them.
