# INDIA'S CREDIT CARD CRISIS # India's credit card market is experiencing unsustainable growth coupled with accelerating delinquencies, creating conditions that could precipitate a consumer credit crisis within 2-3 years. Outstanding credit card debt has surged 208% since March 2019, reaching ₹2.90 lakh crore by May 2025, while delinquency rates in the 90+ days overdue category have climbed to 2.0% as of March 2025. Critical vulnerability indicators include: household debt now consuming 41.9% of GDP (up from 26% in 2015); 55% of household debt now comprising unsecured consumption loans rather than productive asset-building; Gen Z credit defaults rising 28.6% year-on-year; and sub-prime fintech lending surging 2,100% since 2020. The Reserve Bank of India's December 2025 Financial Stability Report identifies unsecured retail credit as a structural asset quality risk, with 53.1% of all retail loan slippages originating from unsecured products. While systemic banking metrics remain superficially healthy, the trajectory suggests a crisis emergence timeline of 2026-2028 triggered by employment shocks, inflation resurgence, or interest rate volatility.
