Even if you desire a war with Iran. Even if the situation is comparable to Japan, Germany, France, whatever, the optics of beginning for your country to be bombed are terrible. Better to be silent and let what happens, happen.

You are 100% correct. Belgium also proposed other solutions, like a collective EU loan to Ukraine, but this was also rejected. The EU argument is the following " You, Belgium, risk nothing because in the end Russia will be forced to pay reparation anyway" which of course supposed Russia's defeat in its war against Ukraine. This is the context of De Wever saying "Russia won't lose the war". I let you appreciate the fundamental contradiction : 25 member states saying there is no risk because Russia's final defeat is a certainty, yet we won't share these non-existent risks with Belgium.

Belgium is a convenient whipping boy in this. The truth is (Politico fails to explain) that De Wever asked for months that other EU members share the financial/legal risks of the "frozen assets as collateral" plan. They refused, again and again. This is all of Europe's doing.

@kaspergoossens Soms krijg ik het gevoel dat heel deze heisa enkel in het voordeel van Rusland is, op zo veel vlakken. Als ik in de FSB zou zitten zou ik in ieder geval alles doen in mijn macht om het hele schouwspel zo veel mogelijk op te poken.

Het mag gedaan zijn met dat België- en De Wever-bashen. De Wever doet wat elke verantwoordelijke staatsleider zou doen. Geen enkel land zou akkoord gaan met wat men van België verwacht. In elk ander EU-land staan Russische tegoeden geparkeerd. Waarom worden die niet vrijgegeven?

@Stoonbrace @Bart_DeWever Dat heeft geen enkele relevantie in het argument van BDW: je kan geen beleid in het heden kan bouwen op de assumptie van een toekomstige Russische capitulatie, en dat gepredetermineerd op die uitkomst nu al de tegoeden voor herstelbetalingen aan te wenden geen goed idee is.

@Stoonbrace @Bart_DeWever Neen, want dat houdt geen Russische capitulatie in en laat dus ook geen eenzijdig opleggen van herstelbetalingen toe. Er zal dus hoe dan ook met Rusland moeten worden onderhandeld over wat er met die tegoeden gaat gebeuren.
