Bringing Ireland's Past to Life 🇮🇪🌹
The funeral procession on the Aran Islands of Sean O'Conghaile (John Conneely) resident of Inis Oírr (Inisheer) the smallest of the three Aran Islands, Co. Galway, 1968.
Photo by James A. Sugar, published in the National Geographic in September 1969.
In 1969, National Geographic photographer Jim Sugar spent three months in Ireland, travelling the country in his blue Austin Sedan. When he encountered a funeral procession on Inisheer, the smallest of the Aran Islands on the west coast of Ireland, it became the image Jim Sugar is most proud of. He knew that the moment he shot that picture it was an exceptional experience. The funeral was for Sean, a resident of Inis Oírr (Inisheer) in the Aran Islands, who died in a hospital on the mainland in Galway. His body and coffin were transferred via Currach from the ship MV Naomh Éanna ("St Enda"), a ferry that historically operated as the primary connection between Galway and the Aran Islands. The ship can be seen in the background, anchored out at sea. The final resting place for the MV Naomh Éanna was the graving dock in the Grand Canal Basin in the Dublin Docklands. Of interest, most people in this photo were still wearing traditional Aran clothing, made mostly of heavy wool from sheep on the island.

It’s much fairer than the soccer version & @usacricket do just enough to produce a major upset v @TheRealPCB, recent visitors to @ClontarfCC to play @cricketireland.
