And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
Genesis 22 : 14
And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.
Exodus 6 : 3
Those who do not believe in the Bible contrast the two verses above to prove that there is a contradiction regarding the name YHWH in the two verses above.
The question is, are these two verses really contradictory?
Exodus 6 : 3 contains information that God declared Himself as YHWH, while Genesis 22 : 14 does not contain information that God declared Himself as YHWH. So where is the contradiction? The answer is, there is no contradiction between the two verses.
If God had never revealed Himself as YHWH to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, then how could Abraham have named the place where he was commanded to sacrifice Isaac YHWH?
Even though God had never revealed Himself as YHWH to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, this does not mean that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob did not know that God is YHWH. In fact, the name YHWH was used by people who lived before Abraham's time.
And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
Genesis 4 : 26
So how did Abraham know the name YHWH?
The following verses can serve as a comparison to the above case:
And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
Genesis 3 : 2 - 3
Eve knew that the One who had forbidden her to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was God, even though God had not yet revealed Himself as God.
Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah
Genesis 7 : 8 - 9
Noah was able to carry out God's command to bring clean and unclean animals into the ark, even though God had not yet given regulations regarding clean and unclean animals.
And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
Genesis 14 : 20
And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
Genesis 28 : 22
Although the law regarding tithing was not given by God until the time of Moses, Abraham, who lived hundreds of years before Moses, was already familiar with the practice of tithing, and Abraham's grandson, Jacob, made a vow regarding tithing.
The verses above prove that although the law regarding food and tithing was not given by God until the time of Moses, they were already in practice long before that time.
Therefore, it is not surprising that Abraham was already familiar with the name YHWH even though God had not yet revealed Himself as YHWH, and there is no contradiction between the two verses.
God bless you all.
