Watching this video reminded me of someone I knew who eventually left her marriage after raising four grown-up children. She had endured years of abuse. Her husband smoked Indian hemp, beat her regularly, and made life unbearable for the family. Whenever she found him smoking around the house, she would take it away. One night, he woke her up because he couldn’t find it and ordered her and the children to go into the bush in the middle of the night to search for it. The abuse affected the children in different ways. One of the daughters, the third child, became pregnant at a young age because she was desperately looking for any way to escape that home. The first son also ran away from home while he was still very young because the trauma had become too much for him. The turning point came one day when the husband was beating his wife and chased her into the room of their second child. Instead of allowing the fight to continue there, the son drove both of them out. Afterward, he told his mother something she never forgot. He said, “We grew up watching our father abuse you, and you chose to stay. If you want to die, that’s your decision. But he will not kill you in my room.” Those words broke her. She had spent years believing she was staying for the sake of her children, only to realize that her children had also been deeply scarred by everything they had witnessed. They weren’t asking her to endure anymore, they were exhausted too. Not long after, she left the marriage. Within a year, she had rebuilt her life. Before leaving, she had quietly bought land, saved consistently, and built herself a house. This year, she performed Hajj Sometimes, staying “for the children” doesn’t protect them. Sometimes, the very thing we think is shielding them is what leaves the deepest wounds.

My visa was approved around the same time as my brother-in-law's iwas excited, so I told my wife. Last year, around June while I was serving in Jos, a friend called me in the middle of the night. She was crying. A man had come to ask for her hand in marriage, but her parents especially her mother, said no. I remember both of us praying that night about it that same night. I honestly felt so bad for her. A few weeks later, when I returned to Lagos around August, I went straight to her house. I couldn't stop thinking about what had happened, so I gathered the courage to speak with her mum. I asked my friend to step outside so I could talk to her mother privately. Her mum knows me well. I asked her, "Why won't you allow her to get married?" Without saying much, she asked me to follow her. She led me to a room. The moment she opened the door, a terrible smell hit me. I could barely breathe. The room was filthy. Clothes, shoes, bags, and random things were scattered everywhere. It looked completely neglected. For a moment, I didn't even know what to think. I was genuinely shocked. Then she looked at me and said, "That's your friend's room." She continued, "I cannot allow her to get married like this. I've warned her since she was a little girl. I trained her well, but she simply chose to live this way." I was speechless. When I came out, my friend kept asking what her mum had said. I pleaded with her mother. I said, "Please call the man back. Give her six months to change." She looked at me and said, "Okay." I left. When I got home, I was still in shock. My mom saw my face and immediately asked, "What happened to you?" Instead of answering, I told her to go into my room. She looked around and said in Yoruba, "What happened to your room? It's perfectly fine." That's when I told her everything. She burst into laughter and said, "I love that woman." Honestly, I know my own parents. They would probably do the same thing. Sometimes, what looks like wickedness is actually preparation. Fast forward to today... We have a wedding to plan this September. My friend completely changed. She became intentional about keeping her space clean, and the same man is still marrying her. Sometimes, the delay isn't rejection. Sometimes, it's a lesson that changes your life forever.
