Residents in Cape Town learnt about the value of waste. Asivikelane partner Indibano Yabahlali explained how recyclables can be sold to create an income. By sorting recyclables from general waste we can prevent waste going to our landfills and keep communities clean. A win for communities and the environment! #Waste #Recycle #Asivikelane #CommunityEmpowerment

New communal toilets were delivered in Bundu Inn, Plastic View and Itereleng in Tshwane. This is good news as recent #Asivikelane data shows that a quarter of residents still don’t have access to a municipal provided toilet. Urban municipalities often struggle to provide permanent sanitation to informal settlements, relying on temporary solutions like chemical toilets and VIP latrines. These often face issues such as high costs, poor maintenance, and community rejection, remaining in place long-term despite their shortcomings. Read our solutions to improve sanitation and address the lack of municipal planning for permanent infrastructure. bit.ly/4uTEuQe

Residents reported to #Asivikelane that waste collection resumed in Delft, Cape Town. Informal settlements often struggle to get regular refuse removal, unlike formal areas. Asivikelane put together a learning paper on how to improve waste management, you can find it on our website here: asivikelane.org/wp-content/upl… Some of our learnings include: • Use settlement profiles and maps to decide whether waste can be collected from households or central drop-off points and identify suitable routes and drop-off locations. • Provide plastic bags for waste collection and work with residents to decide how best to distribute them. • Share collection schedules and drop-off site locations with residents.

#Asivikelane partnered with the @CityofCT Green Jobs Programme to support waste removal from the Vygeskraal Canal. Thetha Community Organization is leading advocacy and campaign work and organised a community clean up. The City pumped the canal to prepare for the clean-up, making it safer for residents to remove waste and improve the local environment. Together, we are working hand in hand with communities to build cleaner, safer, and healthier neighbourhoods.

#Asivikelane is partnering with government to assist residents to develop their own gardening projects. The Provincial Department of Agriculture presented residents in Kanana park and Zamimpilo with sets of gardening tools. This important project is contributing to food security through training residents on composting and food gardening empowering them to grow their own nutritious food. @OfficialGDARD @1to1_AoE

Did you know that access to water and sanitation are considered fundamental human rights. That is why #Asivikelane works to connect informal communities with government to improve access to these services. Inadequate access disproportionately affects vulnerable communities, particularly women and girls. Asivikelane is therefore working to advance dignity, gender equality and social justice through better access to basic service delivery. #HumanRightsDay #HumanRights #Equality #BasicServices #Water #Sanitation #ServiceDelivery

Access to clean, safe water is a human right. Yet, too many communities still struggle with unreliable taps, broken infrastructure, and long walks to fetch water. That’s where #Asivikelane steps in. By amplifying the voices of residents in informal settlements, Asivikelane is helping residents to hold their municipalities accountable and drive real change. Our local community plumbers are fixing broken pipes to ensuring regular water supply, and making everyday life healthier, safer, and more dignified for their communities. On this World Water Day, we are celebrating the power of community action. #WorldWaterDay #WaterIsLife #HumanRights #Asivikelane #AccessToWater #CommunityPower #DignityThroughWater

100 #Asivikelane community plumbers in @KnysnaMuni received toolkits from the @DWS_RSA following their successful completion of the Basic Plumbing Skills Training Programme. These plumbers now each have a fully equipped toolbox with all the tools that they need to help them in identifying and fixing leaks, maintaining plumbing systems, and helping the municipality reduce unnecessary water losses. We are very proud of your achievements and wish you all well on your plumbing journeys! @DAG_activism

#Asivikelane is equipping local residents with handy person and plumbing skills. But it’s about more than just learning a trade, they are also unlocking confidence, building independence, and proving that anyone is capable of achieving great things. Today we hear Yolanda's story. From fixing taps to fixing mindsets, this training is creating stronger communities, one skill at a time. Thank you to @IETI53854263, @ewseta, @DBSA_Bank and @DAG_activism for collaborating with us!

#Asivikelane supports International Women's Day. Women are most often responsible for household chores and are therefore disproportionately affected by poor service delivery. Long waits in water queues or the need to walk long distances to access toilets place an unequal burden on women. By addressing these service delivery challenges, Asivikelane’s work directly reduces the daily hardships women face and strengthens their access to essential services. #IWD2026 #GiveToGain #ForAllWomenAndGirls #Asivikelane

#Asivikelane visited Victor Molosi informal settlement in @KnysnaMunicipality with Ward Councillor Aubrey Tsengwa, the Development Bank of Southern Africa CSI team: Dimpho Mosane, Lunga Schoeman and Dimpho Sefoka. We were shown around by Community Facilitators Nokuthembela, Ashley, Johnny and Martie with Crystal from @developmentactiongroup. They explained how, through the Asivikelane Community Plumbers initiative, they are now able to fix their own taps and toilets. Later we met with Mayor of Knysna Thando Matika and Municipal Manager Dr Richard Martin Director of Integrated Human Settlements. They both spoke of the importance of Asivikelane's work and of our partnership with the municipality. Asivikelane is helping them to fix taps and toilets quickly, all the more important in light of the ongoing water crisis. It was a real pleasure to witness the important work that our residents and partners are doing!

We visited our 100 learners at Africa Skills who are learning plumbing and handyperson skills. These learners are gaining valuable specialisations enabling them to become community plumbers and fix taps and toilets in their own communities. We were excited to have the @DBSA_Bank CSI team with us as well as @DAG_activism who are playing a key role in supporting our work. @ewseta

Residents have been reporting sewage spillages on a daily basis, but without a response from the municipality. (We're about 2 mins in) @Newzroom405 @NMandelaBaymuni @ibp_sa youtu.be/Ueukwq2QvqU?si…

Did you know that #Asivikelane contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals? SDG #6 aims to "ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all." We advocate for better access to water through building relationships with residents, government and other stakeholders. Asivikelane community plumbers are saving and improving access to water by fixing leaking and faulty taps.
