My attention has been drawn to the report of the Osun APC Screening Committee, wherein several far-reaching issues were raised and recommendations were forwarded to the NWC for ratification. While I acknowledge that some of the Committee’s recommendations were made in good faith, others were, in my view, made with clear malice. The Committee noted that the party is factionalised and therefore recommended that the NWC set up a reconciliation committee to close ranks within the party. It also observed that there are lingering grievances among party members, particularly concerning what has been described as an inequitable distribution of federal appointments. As part of its mandate, the Committee further confirmed receiving petitions seeking the disqualification of two aspirants on the grounds that they did not obtain the required number of sponsors from all LGAs in Osun State. Following the receipt of these petitions, the Committee decided to subject all aspirants to the same criteria raised by the petitioners. While I find it difficult to believe that all seven disqualified aspirants failed to meet the stated requirements, my understanding of the law is that such requirements can be waived by the party. The most important qualifications for nomination remain those contained in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is therefore hypocritical that a Committee which had earlier acknowledged factionalisation and inequitable distribution of appointments would further deepen the divide by disqualifying nearly all aspirants while leaving only one candidate and his loyalist. I hereby call on the NWC to overturn the said decision and allow for free and fair primaries, as democratic values are only strengthened through credible, transparent, and inclusive internal party processes.
