@dee_of_e I sadly have heard of all of his buddies and as much as I appreciate their existence they are just in a totally different lane than Habermas. I don't understand why the comparison is even being made.

@ickeriss @pourfairelevide I see your point though. If we focus on post-WWII grand theory, the neo-Kantians were the major influences in Anglo-sociology. However, it’s still worth noting that most grand theorists since Parsons have also incorporated Marx into their analyses, among other theorists.

He also commanded the IRGC forces in Lebanon and was among the orchestrators of the 1983 bombing of the US Marine barracks in Beirut. The look on his face says it all.

@MutualSociology @pourfairelevide I think it’s mainly because the major schools are explicitly influenced by ppl like Weber and Durkheim. You are probably right about the Hegelian social theorists—I haven’t read them, but I think it’s quite true that mainstream sociology is reliant on the ppl she focuses on.

@ickeriss @pourfairelevide The main thing I don’t like about it is that she selectively focused on the neo-Kantians in sociology while ignoring the others, and equating them with sociology. For ex, George H. Mead, an important social theorist, was heavily influenced by Hegel. Georges Gurvitch was another.

@omnidepressant @materialcritic All i’m saying here is that I’d like more context to how this girl “defended” Sati. If she said Sati was good because women should be purified or whatever I’d agree with its condemnation but there’s a more nuanced argument there that is often conflated with its defense.

@omnidepressant @materialcritic I didn’t say it made it defensible. To be clear, Spivak doesn’t “defend” sati. I said there is a conception of Sati in Spivak’s work that makes its “defense” defensible. By framing it as categorically wrong, you simplify the societal & colonial situation that drove its existence.
