@True_Neutral @OldNormalFTW @TruGeno @Variety It’s also interesting what they consider “accuracy.” They don’t care if the actors are Greek or even from the region, if the dialogue is in Greek, or if the lines are recited rhythmically like bards originally recited them to instruments like the lyre. They just want white skin.

@ideuhz @OldNormalFTW @TruGeno @Variety It’s also funny how many mediterranean groups weren’t seen as white until the last 50 or so years. Meanwhile the whiteness of a character from a book is very important. Note there were “black” people in the book as well.

Why is Elon Musk melting down over #TheOdyssey and the Oscars? "Every best picture winner in the Academy’s 98-year history — from the 'Wings' in 1929 through 'One Battle After Another' this past March — clears the Oscars' new inclusion rules. That also includes 'Oppenheimer,' the film directed by Christopher Nolan, with whom Elon Musk had no problem until this past week. And Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of Homer’s 'The Odyssey,' whenever the Academy gets a look at it, would also clear the inclusion standards, and it’s not because Lupita Nyong’o was cast as Helen of Troy," writes Variety's Clayton Davis. variety.com/2026/film/awar…

@ideuhz @LedenUnor @Alonso_GD No they haven't because they know just as the majority of Greeks know that the story of Odysseus is a foundational story of European civilisation. The key being European.

Ok let’s do this! Every Pocahontas played by a Western / non-Native American / White actress. Let’s go! Thread time! 1) Pocahontas: The Legend (1995), played by British actress of French and Chinese heritage, Sandrine Holt

Imagine the outrage if a historically non-White character like Pocahontas were made White in a movie. Yet it’s considered acceptable to make all historically White characters non-White in movies. This is racism against White people.

@OldNormalFTW @TruGeno @Variety You don’t care about the importance of Greek culture. Otherwise you’d be pissed that American Matt Damon and British Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson are playing Greeks instead of Greek actors playing Greeks. But again, you don’t actually care about Greek culture.

@TruGeno @Variety So you'd be fine with them doing a show about High John de Conqueror, but making him white? Because he wasn't real, so it shouldn't matter, right? Right? Cultural importance be dammed, yeah?

@obamareichs @PlayboiEzio @CluedZa @Emarged Bc Helen’s race isn’t central to her character. Ancient Greeks didn’t even have the concept of “whiteness.” Race as a construct didn’t exist back then. Helen’s race has no bearing on her character or the story.

@JBagger4 @LedenUnor @Alonso_GD Ok but 0% of the outrage is about non-Greek actors playing Greek characters. No one has complained about Matt Damon, Tom Holland, or Robert Pattinson not being Greek yet being cast in this movie.

@LedenUnor @Alonso_GD Thank you for proving my point. You've finally realised that the story actually belongs to a people. An ethnicity. That it actually matters who plays the characters.
