Looks like Belgium FM just survived an Israeli attack on Beirut yesterday. Let that sink in.
Maxime PREVOT@prevotmaxime

🇱🇧 (EN/FR/NL) I came to Beirut today to show our full support to the Lebanese authorities and to express our deep solidarity with the families affected by the violent conflict opposing Israel to Hezbollah. Just before I was commending President Aoun for offering to open official negotiations with Israel towards a ceasefire, Israel launched, with no previous warning, one of the most massive strikes since the beginning of the hostilities, allegedly causing hundreds of civilian victims. We were at the embassy with my delegation, just a few hundred metres from where the missiles struck. This must stop. The ceasefire between the US, Israel and Iran must include Lebanon! @BelgiumMFA @BelgiumLebanon

This surprising statement also came in the context of South Korea announcing the appointment of a new special envoy to Iran: (english.news.cn/20260410/beb98…) This comes one day after Spain decision to reopen its embassy in Tehran and suggests more countries will now engage in bilateral agreements with Iran based on a calculation of their material interests and views of the situation rather than the old tradition of mimicking an increasingly erratic and extreme Washington.

🇨🇳🇦🇫🇵🇰 China brokers Afghanistan-Pakistan agreement to halt escalation in fighting Afghanistan and Pakistan agreed on Wednesday not to escalate their conflict and to pursue a comprehensive resolution to their disputes following seven days of peace talks mediated by China in the western city of Urumqi, Beijing’s Foreign Ministry announced. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said all parties acknowledged that “terrorism is the core issue” in the relationship and agreed to continue dialogue, though Islamabad offered no public comment on the outcome.
Xu Feihong@China_Amb_India

Representatives of #China, #Pakistan and #Afghanistan held week-long informal talks in Urumqi, Xinjiang🇨🇳 from April 1 to 7. The Afghan and Pakistani sides reiterated that they follow the purposes and spirit of the UN Charter and the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, stay committed to resolving differences as soon as possible, work for the turnaround of Afghanistan-Pakistan relations, and agree to refrain from actions that may escalate or complicate the situation. The three sides agreed to discuss a comprehensive plan to resolve issues in the relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan, and identified the core and priority issues.

China built 18 superlarge LNG storage tanks, more than twice the rest of the world combined. Each one holds 9.5 million cubic feet, bigger than Madison Square Garden. Keeping natural gas liquid at minus 162°C demands 9% nickel steel plates, concrete outer containment, and specialized cryogenic welding where every joint is ultrasonically inspected. The material expands 600-fold when it warms back to gas, so the tolerances are extreme. This is heavy industrial skill, not something you improvise. South Korea is now building seven tanks of the same size south of Seoul, with Japan following. nytimes.com/2026/04/08/bus…

From “the Iranian regime has only weeks or months left” (Merz) to “I spoke with FM” — good. But it would’ve been more credible if Germany also addressed Israel’s efforts to sabotage the ceasefire.

I’m cutting expected Hormuz exits to 10 vessels/day across all classes, hopefully starting next week. This isn’t a reopening, it’s an execution nightmare. Entries? Near zero, ex Iran’s dark fleet. No inbound flow means no network normalization. Backlog sits at 800–900 vessels. At 10/day, you’re looking at 80–90 days just to clear. That assumes no fresh disruptions and a ceasefire that actually holds. Big assumptions. Core point: until the trapped fleet is out and safe, nobody rational is taking entry risk. You can’t price schedule uncertainty like this. The opportunity cost alone kills it. Result: this crisis runs through July, and more likely bleeds into 2027, despite any one-off release of 150mbbl over 90 days. Tehran won’t give up the Hormuz card. It’s their economic deterrent, cheaper and arguably more effective than a bomb. Trump swapped a potential WMD with an actual economic WMD and likely makes Obama‘s silly JCPOA look like the art of the deal. Example from today‘s FT article: Jakob Larsen, chief safety and security officer at the shipowners’ association Bimco, said that the body was advising members to “await further guidance from the relevant authorities” and warned that crossing the strait would for now “involve heightened risk”. The payment scheme in particular left a “big question mark” about potential violations of western sanctions policy, one industry executive said. “If the Iranians are demanding a toll right now, if you pay that toll you are likely to be violating the US sanctions on Iran,” said Lars Jensen, chief executive of the advisory firm Vespucci Maritime. “Either [shipowners] choose to keep their vessels in the Gulf or pay Iran in violation of US sanctions to get their ships out.” One of countless problems.
Alexander Stahel 🌻@BurggrabenH

Technical limitations: - 12 ships per day (8.5% of normal); - US$1-2m fee charged. 800 vessels trapped. Requires 61 ships/day with 2-week window (today lost). But that’s all noise. My forecast for signal: not ONE ship will ENTER Persian trap (ex Iran dark fleet).

Today, CBS posted an article and a video interview with an American soldier that provided new details on the destruction by Iran of a command center in Kuwait on March 1st that killed six US military personnel. Most have focused on the revelation (not actually new) that this command center wasn't "fortified," as Pete Hegseth put it, and on the accusations of negligence by the DoW. But a few readers noticed something curious in the online version of the article. Buried in the wreckage of the command center is what appears to be a gravity bomb. This bomb bears a strong resemblance to a Soviet-era FAB or RBK 250. What is this bomb doing there? As incredible as it may seem, this may be the first hard evidence we've gotten of the rumors that the Iranian Air Force conducted a series of bombing runs on US military sites in the first phase of the war. This is backed up by an overlooked CENTCOM press release that referenced "attacks from Iranian aircraft" occurring on the 1st at the same time three F-15s were lost, officially to Kuwaiti friendly fire. The Iranian gravity bomb arsenal is primarily composed of (possibly modified) Soviet models. The Iranians themselves released a video of F-4 Phantoms being loaded with munitions, and Tasnim reported they were "preparing to bomb American bases" on the 1st of March. CBS says the command center was hit by a drone. But it's difficult to explain what an apparently Soviet bomb is doing sitting in the debris. If anyone can provide a better match for the bomb model and an explanation of what it might be doing there, please do so in the replies. The fourth image in the set is a FAB-250 variant

Deliberately killing an elderly diplomat and his wife precisely because he was working on a peace effort is one of the greatest crimes imaginable—a killing carried out to prevent a peaceful resolution.
Murtaza Hussain@MazMHussain

The Israeli/US murder of Kharazi at his house along with his wife was truly despicable act—killing a reformist diplomat who served an FM for Khatami and helped develop his “Concert of Civilizations” idea and was reportedly helping mediate the current situation.

People are obsessing over the wrong thing. It's not tankers going through Hormuz. That's mostly signaling. When tankers can go through Hormuz again in real numbers, that will allow regional producers to start unwinding shut-ins. Right now, it's approx. 10 million bpd. That's what is hitting global economy. Not the movement of ships.
