BREAKING: US military says it conducted strikes in southern Iran, targeting vessels and missile launch sites.

This statement by Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, secretary of Iran’s SNSC and a longtime figure associated with the traditional IRGC-security establishment, is quite interesting in my opinion. - At first reading what stands out is that diplomacy is not presented as an alternative to the “resistance” line, but as a continuation of it. The statement repeatedly argues that Iran resisted pressure, pushed the enemy back, and is now approaching “final victory” (an agreement I guess). - In other words, the implicit message seems to be: negotiations are happening because Iran stood firm, not because it surrendered. - I also think the text is important for another reason. Zolghadr is not a reformist or technocratic figure in the Rouhani-Zarif mold. He comes from the core security architecture of the system. The fact that he openly legitimizes the current negotiation phase may suggest that the process enjoys relatively broad consensus across major power centers in Tehran- from Mojtaba himself, the Office of the Supreme Leader, to parts of the military-security establishment. - The line saying that “unity and cohesion are themselves another battlefield” is especially revealing. I guess this is partly about preventing internal polarization and ensuring that different factions do not openly undermine the negotiations during such a sensitive phase. - That would mark an important difference compared to 2015, when parts of the security establishment often appeared far more skeptical of the nuclear talks. - Of course, one should avoid overinterpreting a single statement. But overall, this reads to me less like a simple political message and more like a signal of internal discipline and vertical alignment inside the system during a delicate negotiating phase. - Time will tell. #Iran #IranWar

An agreement in which Iran charges environmental and service fees for ships that pass the strait instead of tolls while also taking responsibility for clearing mines instead of outsourcing it to the U.S. or NATO would indicate that rather than trying to generate revenue from the waterway the deal is attended to affirm Iranian political influence over the strait such that access can be used as leverage to ensure sanctions remain lifted and a new war does not resume.
