Not quite. PTI vote bank, which is now larger than core IK support base, is not based on performance. It is based on disgust for the status quo. Don’t forget what prompted the economic spiral of 2022 that has lasted through till today: it was IK-Tareen IMF tranche bravado and the resulting petrol subsidy. But the sight of Ishaq Dar alone is enough to make even highly dispassionate experts yearn for anything that isn’t status quo. IK’s enduring success? He isn’t “them”.

It is a little rich to watch the PTI get beaten black and blue for months and then expect it to not choose people like Ali Amin Gandapur for key offices. We have seen this movie before. Parties choose loyalists and tough guys because military domination of politics cultivates a survivalist mindset. Ask yourself if you were in a dark alley and needed a friend: do you choose Gandapur or the many much more sophisticated but less scary options PTI has in KP?
