ILEJEMEJE EKITI KILLING OF CHRISTIAN WORSHIPPERS, A SAD TESTAMENT OF WHERE WE ARE!
I received with deep shock and profound sadness the tragic news of the brutal attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) No. 2 in Eda Oniyo, Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
Reports indicate that armed bandits, numbering about seven, invaded a revival gathering at approximately 7:30 p.m., opened fire with sophisticated weapons, killed the invited pastor, and abducted no fewer than thirteen innocent worshippers.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the attack lasted for about forty minutes, throwing the entire community into chaos as residents fled for their lives.
I am deeply pained by this senseless loss of life and the abduction of innocent citizens who had gathered in worship.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of the slain pastor, the church, and the people of Eda Oniyo and surrounding communities who are now grieving and living in fear.
My thoughts and prayers are with those who have been abducted, and I stand in solidarity with their families at this very painful time.
It is particularly troubling that, despite distress calls made during the attack, security response was reportedly delayed. It is my firm belief that a more timely intervention could have significantly reduced, if not completely prevented, the scale of this tragedy.
While I acknowledge the current efforts of security personnel who are combing the surrounding bushes in search of the abductors and the victims, this incident once again underscores the urgent need for a more proactive, intelligence driven security architecture across our country.
Our communities cannot continue to live at the mercy of criminal elements.
Places of worship must remain sanctuaries of peace, not theatres of violence.
I therefore call on all relevant security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure the immediate rescue of the abducted persons and the swift apprehension and prosecution of those responsible for this heinous act.
I also urge governments at all levels to strengthen local security frameworks, improve rapid response mechanisms, and restore public confidence in the safety of lives and property.
Nigeria must not become a country where citizens are unsafe even in places of worship.
