We have introduced a RoomMate® to our accessible toilet to ensure independence to our visitors who live with sight loss. Located on the wall, it offers bespoke assistance to everyone who enters and if audio guidance is needed a narration details the layout of the room.

Our guides help businesses assess the accessibility of their toilets (and users will find them helpful if making an access/equality complaint). We found around 5% of toilets do not meet UK access standards, and are not usable! ⭐️Link in bio. #toilets #accessibility #Disability

@WellingtonShops The flush should also be on the transfer space side of the toilet. We have e-booklets on our website to help you assess your accessible toilets and help make toilets accessible for as many as possible / meet legal UK requirements. 👍🏼

Did you know that we have installed a colostomy shelf in our accessible toilet? By becoming stoma-friendly we hope that it will give confidence to those visiting who otherwise might have thought twice about it.

@WellingtonShops Hello, having a shelf is great but it might be worth seeing if another nearby location might be better as you could run into health and safety problems (it’s at back of head/neck height & for disabled people who have seizures or balance issues and fall backwards, can be deadly).

@waitrose @_nalloooon Under building regulations it must be at a set height and not touching the floor. Visit our website or Twitter account for a helpful ebook guide on how to assess accessibility.

@_nalloooon Hi, I've had a response from the branch Management team who have advised they have implemented a temporary fix & have reported this to maintenance for a replacement to be provided as soon as possible. ^Karen

@waitrose this is the disabled toilet in your Tilehurst branch, why doesn’t the cord in the disabled toilet reach the ground? It’s been cut. If any disabled person fell, they cannot reach the emergency cord leaving this disabled toilet a just regular toilet… pointless…

@NickySimpson98 There should be no mirror above the sink, the tap should be at the back left nearest the toilet, the seat isn’t a contrasting colour to the toilet pan and has a gap and there isn’t a shelf for people with an ostomy (and chrome is not recommended for fittings due to glare).

@ifori What things do you think it’s failed on because this is one of the nicer and more spacious accessible toilets I’ve been in that hasn’t been a changing places one (them ones are amazing).

It happened again this time at Hull Interchange, I went into this lovely spacious accessible toilet and it was like I entered heaven. I went over to the grab bars to help me stand up to pull my leggings up and saw that the red cord had been tied up.

@SimonJosephs @RupertMyers They are only for use by people who need the access features which specifically include ‘availability, proximity, accessible route’ or are a carer. In the UK a company who doesn’t protect toilets from misuse by others is likely to be acting outside of Equality Legislation.

@RupertMyers I saw a similar question elsewhere which basically asked whether disabled toilets are there to provide specific facilities along with quicker access (ie no queues) or is everyone actually entitled to use them?

Please tell me I’m not alone in having opted for a disabled loo (bigger, cleaner) only for someone to then try the handle, forcing me to consider how I might have to dramatically hobble out.

The law doesn’t recognise ‘not in keeping with the building’ as a reason to deny access to disabled people by not building an accessible toilet. Many listed buildings and their ground throughout the UK have amazing accessible toilets. We need action not excuses!

A TOWN Council has objected to plans for an accessible toilet facility next to a listed museum, arguing it is “not in keeping” with the historic building. dlvr.it/T39sqt 🔗 Link below

Lovely to have a heartfelt reply and apology from @CraftPubs after telling them that their accessible toilet is inaccessible. Not even worth a second glance to make sure they didn't just cut and paste two bleh messages. #Sarcasm #Accessibility #AccessDenied

@NickySimpson98 I think you misunderstood - I was saying that not only is the cord tied but the actual toilet fails on 5 counts of building regulations, (5 other visible features) in case the owner was reading. And spurred to fix it!!

@ifori Yes it is in the UK because that’s where I live and I’m aware that they aren’t supposed to be like that and it’s why I try to raise awareness of the red cords and to get people to stop tying them up.
