@euronews Russia historically liberated Finland from Sweden that treated Finns as second class people and its autonomy lead it to independence. For sure URSS took part o Karelia, but the bad guys are the French and Germans that historically invaded Russia. Let´s stop to be Hypocritical.

I did not support the decision to go to war. Threats to the US were not imminent and non-military means for achieving our objectives had not been exhausted. But if his war results in democratic regime change, the permanent end of Irans nuclear program, the complete disarmament of Irans missiles, and the end of financing for terrorists, I will applaud Trump. (These are all goals that Trump himself has articulated)

@McFaul A sound principled democratic internal US is the single control to an external US that sometimes is erratic and tyrannic. The ones that admire US got a secondhand embarrassment with the terrible threats of a final destruction of Iran that the "Good" Nations have abused for decads

To advance American interests, Engagement is better than isolationism. Multilateralism is better than unilateralism. Promoting values is better than just pursuing power. For the details, see Autocrats vs. Democrats: China, Russia, America, and the New Global Disorder.

The Strait of Hormuz is an international strait. Under UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (which Iran has not ratified) all ships & aircraft enjoy freedom of navigation & overflight. No state can suspend this right. Rights are not subject to negotiation & renegotiation.

@sarahadams Two superpower fundamentalist counties literally destroyed a weaker, much weaker fundamentalist country and you still want more? How would you feel if your school, temple, bridge, and water facilities were destroyed? What will the people of Iran eat. Oh you will get their oil.

It’s amazing how many people on this platform have clearly never watched a real negotiation with a terrorist regime or any terrorist entity for that matter. This isn’t sunshine and rainbows. It’s pressure, consequences, and making it unmistakably clear that if the Iranian regime won’t change their ways, they highly risk being ended. Let’s get something straight, because this keeps getting butchered, the civilization he is talking about ending is the Islamist regime, the assholes that took over 47 years ago and literally ruined the original Persian civilization in Iran that no one in the west seems to ever show empathy for. That distinction shouldn’t be this hard. And no, they shouldn’t be forced to be subservient to terrorists for another 50 years because you with 50,000 followers on some social media echo chamber said so. While some rush to defend a failed terrorist state, that same regime has been hanging teenagers this whole past week. I’ve seen zero concern over that, they’ve also been sending 12 year olds to be cannon fodder. Spare me the outrage. And to those immediately spiraling into “this means nuclear war,” please chill and relax a little. All this literally is ending a future nuclear threat. Not every hard-line equals global catastrophe. That’s not how this works. You’ve grown so used to watching terrorist pandering that you don’t even recognize what resolve looks like. The regime are paper tigers let them fold or make a choice that will lead to their ultimate demise. As Winston Churchill put it, “We shall show mercy, but we shall not ask for it.”

Imagine if you had written a book or film screenplay 30 years ago and the plot was that a deranged US President (and the Israeli PM) were prepared to nuke and totally destroy a country of 91.5m people- and the rest of the world’s leaders just sat back, heard the threats, shrugged their shoulders and did nothing. The plot would be dismissed as being too far-fetched. But here we are.

Trump is channeling his inner Ronald Reagan for Iran: “Let’s set the record straight. There is no argument about the choice between peace and war. But there’s only one guaranteed way you can have peace, and you could have it in the next second, surrender. Admittedly there is a risk in any course we follow other than this, but every lesson of history tells us that the greater risk lies in appeasement. This is the specter our well-meaning liberal friends refuse to face. Their policy of accommodation is appeasement. It gives no choice between peace and war, only between fight or surrender. If we continue to accommodate, continue to back and retreat, eventually we have to face the final demand, the ultimatum. What then? When Nikita Khrushchev has told his people he knows what our answer will be. He has told them that we’re retreating under the pressure of the Cold War. Someday when the time comes to deliver the final ultimatum, our surrender will be voluntary, because by that time we will have been weakened from within spiritually, morally, and economically. He believes this because from our side he’s heard voices pleading for “peace at any price” or ‘better red than dead,’ or as one commentator put it, ‘I’d rather live on my knees than die on my feet.’ And therein lies the road to war, because those voices don’t speak for the rest of us. You and I know and do not believe that life is so dear and peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery. If nothing in life is worth dying for, when did this begin, just in the face of this enemy? Or should Moses have told the children of Israel to live under the Pharaohs? Should Christ have refused the cross? Should the patriots at Concord Bridge have thrown down their guns and refused to fire the shot heard ’round the world? The martyrs of history were not fools, and our honored dead who gave their lives to stop the advance of the Nazis didn’t die in vain. Where, then, is the road to peace? Well, it’s a simple answer after all. You and I have the courage to say to them: There is a price we will not pay. There is a point beyond which they must not advance.” The people one this app want “peace,” even if it means appeasement, which is really just surrender. In fact some of them, like Tucker Carlson and Stephen King, would prefer appeasement. It is some serious Neville Chamberlain energy. They simply do not have the spine to make the right decisions. They just want to make the popular decisions, meaning the easy ones. It is why there will NEVER be a libertarian president in this country: libertarians are too cowardly to project strength on the world stage. The greatest leaders in history are the ones who make the tough choices, not the popular ones. The Iranian regime needs to go. They tried to killed Trump, they killed thousands of Americans, they killed thousands of their own citizens who rebelled against their oppressive regime. Trump is making the tough choices past presidents were too cowardly to make.

How can Trump threaten to kill "a whole civilization" in one sentence and also ask for God's blessing of that same civilization in another sentence? This irrational, unhinged rhetoric does not serve the interests of the American people. America has never been in the business of destroying whole civilizations. That's not who we are. In making such a threat, Trump is grossly out of step with American values and American society. Hoping prudence ultimately prevails.

I trust you're wise enough to know why Iran can never be allowed to have a nuke and how it will get harder (thanks to technology progress, etc.) to prevent them in the future. I trust you're also wise enough to realize that delaying the hard decision for decades means the more intense and drastic the actions must be whenever they're taken. Trump needs to do whatever it takes to destroy their capability.

If Trump wanted NATO to go to war with him in Iran, maybe he shouldn't have threatened to invade and annex one ally, joked about making another 51st state, or irrationally slapped tariffs on them. He also should have asked for NATO's support before launching his war, not after.

@McFaul Sorry professor, but the complete agression of the two most powerfull fundamentalist governments against a fundamentalist regime is a much worse war. It is a destruction of relatively Civilized times. We at the periphery of the Empire fear these governments will become a regime.
