NID Madhya Pradesh and IGRMS Bhopal to Celebrate National Handloom Day 2026 with ‘Dhaaga Ek Pehchaan – Threads of Identity’ 25+ artisans from across India to converge in Bhopal for a three-day celebration of craft, featuring the ‘Bichhauna’ exhibition of traditional carpets, rugs and mats Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh – The National Institute of Design, Madhya Pradesh (NID MP), in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS), Bhopal, and under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, will observe National Handloom Day 2026 with a three-day programme titled ‘Dhaaga Ek Pehchaan – Threads of Identity’, to be held from 7 to 9 August 2026 across the NID MP campus and IGRMS, Shyamla Hills. The programme will bring together more than 25 master artisans and craftspersons from Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Gujarat, Punjab, Maharashtra and other states, representing crafts such as Kalamkari, Tangalia weaving, Tripura textiles, Chikankari, carpet weaving, block printing, jewellery making, Madhubani painting, Lippan work, tufted rug making, Phulkari, and handloom sarees including Maheshwari, Chanderi and Paithani. The celebrations will open on 7 August with a registration and inauguration ceremony at the NID MP Main Auditorium, followed by hands-on workshops with master artisans in tufted rug making and Lippan art, a session of crafting conversations where artisans will share their stories and experiences, and a tribal dance performance. Running through the day will be an artisan work showcase with food stalls, and ‘Farshnama’, a display of carpets drawn from the IGRMS reserve collection. The second day, 8 August, will continue the hands-on workshops, the Farshnama exhibition and the artisan showcase at the NID MP campus, giving visitors extended opportunities to engage directly with the craftspeople and their techniques. The programme will conclude on 9 August at IGRMS, Shyamla Hills, with an artisan work showcase at the Vithi Sankul, followed by a valedictory ceremony and certificate distribution for participating artisans. The evening will close with ‘Rivayat – A Fashion Show: A Walk Through Handcrafted Elegance’, presenting contemporary interpretations of India's handcrafted textile traditions. Running concurrently, from 6 to 9 August at the NID MP campus, is ‘Bichhauna’, an exhibition on traditional handmade carpets, rugs and mats presented by IGRMS in collaboration with NID Madhya Pradesh. Drawing on IGRMS's museum collection, the exhibition traces the craftsmanship and regional diversity of India's floor-covering traditions.
