It was so nice to end the year with a little celebration of our book together with other authors (former members of my team) who came to Genova for a little symposium and get-together. And this allowed former members to meet with present members of the @S4HRI_iit team 😊

@ilkayari Very interesting. Girard makes study of Kafka's "The Hunger Artist" to draw inferences about the "competitive" nature of self-induced food deprivation.

Similarly, AN patients’ body awareness improved when watching others’ faces over their own: frontiersin.org/journals/human… Like Girard’s mimetic theory, a reduced sense of self paired with heightened response to other “bodies” might sustain anorexia in a loop of imitation and rivalry
Tim Howles@AimeTim

1. In one interesting, controversial and yet little-known essay, René Girard applies his theory to an understanding of the phenomenon of eating disorders: ‘Anorexia and Mimetic Desire’ (2013, from a 1996 lecture). A thread.

🚀 NEW PAPER OUT on @SciRobotics! How can robotics deepen our understanding of the sense of self? The review paper explores how robotics can advance our understanding of selfhood by constructing embodied models and using robots as experimental tools. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

@LeahBanellis Yes, definitely. The problem is that these practices are sometimes portrayed as one-size-fits-all “solutions” which can overlook individual differences

@ilkayari Thank you for the kind words! I think it can indeed, but it depends on the individual and the type of meditation/intervention - some types may still be helpful

Amazing study! On a related note, findings on the link between body-wandering and negative thoughts made me think (and convinced) that mindfulness meditation focused on bodily sensations might do more harm than good for those with anxiety.
Leah Banellis@LeahBanellis

What happens when our stream of consciousness turns inward, towards the body? Our new fMRI study of 536 individuals finds that 'body-wandering' is associated with distinct patterns of brain connectivity, physiology, affect, and mental health: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

@ilkayari yes, it's such a bizarre yet influential story. I wrote a whole book just around this archetypal theme (coming out next year)

@ninabegus Glad to! Also, I must add that I think the Pygmalion myth motif adds a really compelling layer to the study
