A lecturer walked into a lecture hall one day at OAU. It was an English department class. He mounte the podium and said; "No word has meaning in isolation." The students were shocked. "Really?" "We can't know what a word in isolation means?" They puzzled. But he proved it to them. "What does 'set' mean?" He asked. None of the students could answer. Then he told them that a word has concrete meaning only when used in a context. This event perfectly illustrates biblical hermeneutics. We approach the bible thinking it was written to us. But it wasn't. It was written to people living in different parts of the Middle East and modern-day Europe. And this was 3,500 years ago. These people had vastly diverse cultures, languages, and contexts. Even the authors were very different. And they are all dead. So when we read scripture, the first thing to note is that the Bible wasn't written to us. That the author had a meaning in mind. And that meaning has happened in the past. And we must go back 2,000 years to know: the author the people the context the culture of where that meaning happened. This is called exegesis- the process of determining the historical and contextual intention of a bible author in a passage. Once we know this, then we bring that meaning back to our present day to see how it applies to us. Or if it applies to us. This is called contextualization. The process of giving a new context to the intended meaning of the author. This is the basis of good Bible study. First, exegesis. Second, contextualization. If we do this, we'd know that Paul saying greet one another with a holy kiss was context-specific, not a commandment for us today. But we can apply it to keeping relational fellowship. Lastly, there are four errors people are prone to make in bible interpretation: 1. Contextualization without exegesis An example of this is saying polygamy is biblical and ok for us without factoring that the context where polygamy occurred was descriptive and not prescriptive. 2. Subjectivity Thinking how we see a verse is the truth about it. So a person can say that killing is wrong. Though the bible said God killed, the writers must have been mistaken to say that. That's subjectivity. 3. Exegesis without contextualizing A person could know what the author intended, but not let the knowledge transform them. These know the truth and still don't accept it. In summary, before you claim to know what the Bible is saying, remember this: Scripture wasn't written to you, it was written for you. Find out what the author was saying to his audience first, before applying it to yourself. This is an overview of hermeneutics, the art and science of bible interpretation.
