@SkinnyfatTony @jason_bennitt Would pay for it and then toggle back down next month if you don’t find yourself using it as much, the 4.8 model isn’t usually needed btw you can get most of the benefit from 4.6

@jason_bennitt thanks. just getting started on a few projects. one is modernizing my greasebot controls, moving off legacy allen bradley plc/hmi to something with web capability, more modern UI (maybe ignition), working with claude to help the transition.

Bummer 💀. Is the Max plan worth the extra coin? Doing some neato stuff for GreaseBots. I am just getting started having AI help with code, very cool learning experience. Also learning about running out of usage lol.

I think, to your point, the US is primarily still high-mix work even after the push for reshoring, and robots today aren’t equipped to handle that well yet. That is changing with AI advancements leading to the launch of robots that are more adept at handling many different types of work, the prime example being humanoid robots. Would be curious if this is the right take!

@SkinnyfatTony @overlook_colony Is the demand for robotics integrator market growing or are people still seeing it more cost effective for humans to do the work instead of robots? Do you see a world where we can compete with chinese prices through robotics advancements?

When my old robotics shop closed in 2024, I was super bummed I had to sell both my waterjets. I had an Omax 55100 and 2652. Well, I was bummed enough to eventually find a deal on another 55100, newer, and with motorized Z axis. Finally got it moved into place, power drop is in. Just need to get it hooked up and go through it. It was as-is, I'm assuming I'll need a pump rebuild. Over the next month or so I'll be getting this thing rolling. Of all the equipment I have owned over the years, my waterjets were my favorite. They are money printers. Picked this one up for under $25k. #omax #waterjet

@SkinnyfatTony @overlook_colony Thanks for explaining! How are companies adapting to the tariff pressures? Are they deciding to pay the tariffs versus investing in automated capital equipment in the us since they don’t have the capital to invest due to high interest rates?

The city has a lot of potential — in the late 1800s and the early 1900s the worlds smartest people moved here similar to how folks move to Austin and SF today, leading to some of the best schools in the US to be located in this region. Is @basepowerco building an office here or you supplying power to Chicago?

@zanehengsperger Have you tried indeed smart sourcing? You can reach out to factory workers who are passively looking or who posted their resume for a prior job search. I don’t use it for factory employees but I’ve seen it work well for other similar labor markets.

My brother had a friend named Tony. Tony was fat, so they called him Fat Tony. Well, Tony lost a a bunch of weight, so he became Skinny Fat Tony, hence my handle. Should I rename to something more robot porn appropriate, or keep it?

You have a relatable story. You've worked long, and hard. Got kicked down. Held on as best as possible. Still have something to keep you pressing forward. Keeping on. That's the American story at this point. I believe millions of people are here, now. Not just Americans. Our governmental system feels pretty broken. Ai is soon to fill in. And Robots will be coming in force not far behind AGI. All of this is on the back of Covid . And I suppose that was to some degree on the back of the CDO markets crash. It's one thing after another. People need hope. Because we see that in the longer run it's not looking good.

I logged in today and found that my follower base has doubled overnight....why is that - because I am posting things that I do, things that I enjoy, and my story. It resonated with people, X is teeming with engineers, developers, techs, and everything in between. This kind of content is necessary. X isn't just a debate stage for politics, it's full of very interesting and capable people, which is obvious. I honestly never knew it. I have thousands of people to follow back, and I will - its going to take a bit since there are follow back limits, but I'll work tough it. For now - here's a massive robotic welding cell we were building that had an 8000# welding fixture, 2x Fanuc M710iC/20L welding robots, Lincoln welding equipment, a Gudel servo RTU track. This fixture is mounted on a custom designed headstock system that has dual-sync servo drives from both ends - for both rotation and lift. We had to lower the entire fixture down so it could be loaded, then raise it back up so that it can rotate about its horizontal axis... so dual sync rotary and dual sync raise/lower. We built it all in-house with CNC mills, CNC lathe, CNC waterjet, powder coated in-house, I had to send out the yellow structure for stress relief and machining on a large format horizontal. This one pushed the boundary for my company, but we did it anyway.

@SkinnyfatTony Exciting that you have this wealth of experience as the field enters a new age- one more question: can robotics help the US compete on manufacturing prices in the next five years?

@ily9000 It was pretty stagnant for a while, but now with some of the offline programming systems out there, having a real working digital twin of a cell is pretty much standard. Tons of improvements in vision, guidance, and ai driven path programming. Its advancing more rapidly now.

My robotics company of 20 years closed down at the end of 2024. It was a very hard time for me. I had to sell off most of my equipment, my 30k sq ft building, and dismantle by myself what I built piece by piece. I lost my identity, and went through some very dark times. I am still struggling, but I am coming out the other side. I kept my small 8k sq ft building, my Okuma CNC Machine, added a Haas TL2, still have my Omax 55100 waterjet, still making a patented product that I developed at my old company. Tesla is one of my customers. This is something I am doing on the side, I am now also the General Manager of Robotics at an integrator as a full-time job. I kept my head up the best I could, I kept moving forward. That was the most important part - keep moving forward, no matter what, even if it doesn't make any sense as to why. Here's a pic of my current setup...I call it "The Garage of Broken Dreams" lol. I am making the best of it and moving forward.

Just designed a new machine. It’s called a wire de-coiler. As the name suggests, it de-coils the wire to be fed into the machine. It works in tandem with our CNC machines. This is a bought out machine till now but we did the math and we can actually make it for roughly the price. Another machine to be made in-house soon!

@will_alverson Are costs more competitive when some starts a new shop compared to offshore or is this primarily for folks who need things with quick lead times

@zobotics Curious what the biggest challenge has been to finding a use case, is it that the robots can't beat humans in cost yet or the market for the product is too small in the US since those processes are primarily done offshore due to the supply chain being cheaper?
