I have a lot of sympathy for a certain kind of objection to my worldview. To summarize: "You literally want to use the threat of government force to stop me from doing certain kinds of computations because of your half baked pet theory built on an edifice of independent abstract arguments. These computations are extremely useful and benefit many people btw!" I have a lot of sympathy for this type of objection. I don't look down on anyone for making this kind of objection. In nearby worlds I would have been right there alongside you. And yet, I still think that very probably the wise move for humanity would be to unprecedentedly slow down frontier ML research. This is not because I am insensitive to the kind of argument I summarize above, but because I am sensitive to a different kind of argument about the extreme power of general intelligence, and the extreme difficulty of getting this particular engineering problem right. It is possible and I think a sign of good conscience to be sensitive to both of these kinds of reasons simultaneously. I guess I wanted to make it clear that if my summary rhymes with your primary objection, we are really not so different, and there are probably many mutually beneficial conversations left for us to have.
