MOGADISHU: Civil society is a movement independent from the government, with its role being to hold the government accountable and correct its wrongdoings. In recent times, the activities of Somalia's civil society groups have dramatically declined, with their influence weakened and divided by political, clan, and financial interests. Meanwhile, attacks targeting prominent civil society members—especially the leaders of media organizations—have further worsened the situation in Somalia. The Somali Journalists Syndicate @sjs_Somalia participated in a discussion in Mogadishu organized by @hiillawfirm, Mogadishu-based legal organization. The discussion examined the shortcomings of Somalia’s civil society and explored ways to improve it.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of speaking at the Press Freedom and Protection of Journalists in Somalia workshop, organized by the Norwegian Embassy, SOMWA, and FESOJ. I addressed the critical need for stronger legal protections and access to legal aid for journalists in Somalia. Journalists must have access to justice and robust protection mechanisms not only to safeguard their work, but to uphold the public’s right to information. Press freedom is fundamental to democracy, rule of law, and human rights.
