@OwenGregorian @DataJuggler007 A company can disappear in a day, sometimes with your data. Or the data can disappear without a useful recovery path. Even if you outsource email hosting, it is still a good idea to keep your own backups, for example with imapsync.

@mthaichi Imapsync is there since 2001, free, open and gratis, most of the time :-)

@CG1050 imapsync does not add anything to the messages migrated.

After IMAP migration to Gmail or Office 365, Outlook shows the migration date instead of the original on every email. Tools like BitTitan, imapsync or CloudM add a Received header with today's date. Fix: redate.io/?v=1

If you've ever had to use #ImapSync to migrate mail from one server to another, you know what a pain the terminal commands are. I wrote this GUI for it using Flask to make things easier for myself.

@ocen_chris It's gratis below 3 GB but also above 3 GB. The statement you mention remains true. It's just a trick, an incentive, to pay. I couldn't stand to see transfers truncated under 3 GB because of me. But I like/need money :-) So, I found this marketing solution satisfying enough.

@LiamKearney99 The feature "there are over N messages would you like to run in parallel?" doesn't sound good to me. First, it's usually cumbersome for the user when a command becomes interactive. Second, parallel runs on the same account is error-prone.

@imapsync But it would be very handy if imapsync connected to the hosts and then asked questions like: - this mailbox could be (automatically flag) mapped to that mailbox (leave empty to confirm) or type the destination: - there are over N messages would you like to run in parallel?

@LiamKearney99 The feature "this mailbox could be mapped to that mailbox" is done by the --automap option, without asking though, it's based on known cases. So, what this discussion suggests is that I should turn on --automap by default, shouldn't I?

@LiamKearney99 I rarely fight about compatibility, I usually fight against my laziness to make changes :-) What changes would you like in the flags list or the default behavior?

@imapsync I guess you have to fight a lot of compatibility to change stuff since your software has been around for so long. You should consider adding a —modern-defaults flag which lets you change stuff up

@imapsync Nah it’s good software for what it does, it worked for me, thank you. I just wish the default flags / just run and gun used some sort of parallelism without having to fiddle with xargs etc.

Eventually went with imapsync. Funny thing is, I knew imapsync was the right tool from the start. I just kept postponing it because I didn’t feel like living in the terminal. Lesson learned.

This week was spent migrating mail data between servers. Tried importing PSTs via Outlook first — dead end. Switched to a few GUI tools — more friction than progress.

imapsyncで大学のメールを別のサーバに自動で移そうと思ったけど、OAuthしか対応していない上に、追加のアプリ登録もしないみたいだから、無理だなー。Thunderbirdを常時起動して何かうまくする方法を考えないといけない…。 u.tsukuba.ac.jp/email-u-client/

@arnedge Okay. But how to clean up? What criteria? How long will it take to clean up? Disk space is so cheaper as time goes on so a cleanup is useless, time consuming and prone to delete good stuff. Either you go to a brain new mailbox, forget everything, or keep everything.

Helping migrate 40,000 emails from one account into Google Workspace because they had to be imported. If your business email’s been active since the ‘90s, chances are it’s overdue for a cleanup.
