When AI changes the wrong thing in your code, what do you do first? - check the logs - revert and re-prompt - explain the architecture again - switch models - take over manually I’m curious which habit actually saves people the most time.

Don't start a business unless it's the only option. To be an entrepreneur, you basically have to be unemployable. Being told what to do makes you want to scream. You're overflowing with ideas on how to improve things you don't even own yet. You're just the right amount of broken.

I noticed one employee wearing noise-canceling headphones. Not earbuds. The big, cushioned over-ear kind that create a tiny personal universe. I asked if everything was alright. He said yes, he’s just trying to focus. I told him we value focus, but isolation can misread as resistance to collaboration. He said he’s literally sitting at his desk doing his job. I told him we track human presence, not just output. He asked how presence is measured. I said imperfectly, which is why it's so important. Then I logged “avoiding spontaneous culture building opportunities” in his engagement profile.

I refuse to be outsmarted by a 23-year-old using keyboard shortcuts. I asked a junior analyst to pull the annual turnover data. He did it in 4 seconds. I asked him how he bypassed the manual data entry protocol. He said he just used a VLOOKUP on a spreadsheet he made. I told him that using hidden formulas to obscure his workflow creates an environment of deceit. He asked if I was mad that he saved us three hours of busywork. I explained that efficiency is only valuable when it's transparent to leadership. I noted "relies on digital witchcraft to avoid hard work" in his file. Then I uninstalled Excel from his machine. He can use an abacus until he learns humility.

Context is critically underestimated. Modern IT mostly works with current values while ignoring context as a vector. A value tells you what is true now. Context tells you how it got there, under which conditions it is valid, where it is heading, and what it actually means. Data without context does not reconstruct reality. It only captures a snapshot.

A senior architect told me she'd stopped approving AI-generated PRs from her juniors. Her VP noticed. Approval rates dropped. Cycle times spiked. Suddenly, she's the bottleneck. So she invited the VP to a code review. Just to observe. The junior explained the PR. Confident. Articulate. Code executed. Tests passed. Then she asked, "What happens if we add a second payment provider next quarter?" Silence. The junior stared at the code. The model that generated it doesn't know the roadmap. The code didn't contain an answer, because the system design didn't exist beyond the current ticket. In 8 months, the juniors shipped 40,000 lines of code. None of them could explain how the system worked outside of their immediate task. They thought they understood the codebase. They never actually read it. "They're not bad engineers," she said. "But they've never been wrong long enough to learn anything." The VP had offered courses, certifications, book clubs. But the architect needed something else, and it wasn't more training. She needed permission to slow things down, so the juniors could build a real mental model. One that lives outside the chat window. Juniors don't develop judgment from getting things right. They develop it by sitting with wrong answers, long enough to understand why they failed. You want to test their understanding? Ask them to diagram the system. No IDE/docs/ AI. If the diagram has gaps, those gaps exist in their heads too. You won't notice, until something actually breaks.
