The moment you label a discipline as "arbitrary," you’ve given yourself an intellectual excuse to quit when things get inconvenient. The injury isn't in your shoulder, it's in your character. You aren't avoiding pushups to "save your joints"; you’re avoiding them because you’re addicted to optimization as a mask for laziness. Hard things have the purpose of making you a person who can do hard things. Everything else is just cope.

I never saw the benefit to doing 100 pushups a day. Sure it’s a challenge. But aside from that there’s no inherent advantage to doing it. It could be even be detrimental in the form of shoulder injuries. It’s an arbitrary challenge with no purpose other than being hard to do.
