Writing down the mechanism and detailing what people have seen and experienced with their own eyes doesn’t mean it’s some sort of meticulously planned out thing. You’re right — people pick random people they like for Reasons and pick their side. That’s the whole point of my post but trying to oversimplify and frame it as deliberate is incredibly uncharitable.

Okay here’s the real honest to god truth about why I get canceled so much that people don’t understand. Most of you do not have the same Twitter experience as me. I work here. There are two types of workers on Twitter: people who generate interest and people who steal it. I’m an interest generator. People who are talentless follow me around and find reasons to cancel me because they know I’m not able to engender strong loyalty in all of the people whose interest I grab. This is why I get canceled so much. It has almost nothing to do with me as a person and everything to do with inferior people seeing me as free attention or money. Being a visible woman on Twitter also means that I’m constantly in a perception war against people who don’t value their time at all. So when it comes to being canceled, catch me never campaigning one-on-one to win people’s loyalty. This is something a lot of people will invest most of their time in and I find it intolerable. If you follow someone who’s always pulling you into group chats, this is the lazy version of that. They’re trying to enlist you in their cause and force loyalty by lightly touching upon you socially. And so many people are attention starved that they’ll do exactly that. The reason I don’t counter-campaign by building personal relationships is because I don’t want anyone who thinks my attention makes me a good person. If I pay attention to you, that doesn’t mean I’m worth being loyal to. You’d be shocked at how many people subconsciously believe and follow this rule. The problem is that those people are also liable to fall in line during cancellations, so they’re not just useless to me, they’re actually dangerous. So if you’re wondering why I don’t return DMs, it’s mostly because I don’t want to have fake friendships just so you’ll follow me blindly around this app. I’m building communities in earnest, and I don’t want people who are eager to parasocially prove their loyalty to me to be attracted to my presence online. Keeping that wall up between you and I is not only healthy, but it builds stronger communities of people with self awareness and conviction. So the next time you see me getting canceled, pay special attention to the social clique involved. They’re all in an alliance to steal followers, subscribers, clicks due to a lack of actual interest or talent. That’s why I constantly get canceled by entire social cliques built upon shallow loyalties. People are lonely and mistake shallow personal interactions as a basis for loyalty to a person and a lot of people exploit this. People who understand this dynamic are, in some way or another, grateful that I’m so aloof and keep my distance. It means I’m not using you.
