I’ve sat on this parcel for 2 weeks! Nervous about opening it. I put so many hours into this, at times questioning myself and my skills and knowledge. Imposter syndrome never goes away haha. But it’s here, it’s finished, and I couldn’t be prouder of myself. From the lowest of lows, suicidal, wanting it all to end, to this, a published author, writing about one of the things that saved his life! I can’t wait for you all to read it!

The Art of Composition. Composition is a fundamental aspect of photography that can make or break an image. It involves arranging the elements with a scene or frame to create a visually appealing and impactful photograph. In this post we have two versions of the same photograph. In the original image the Hoverfly is positioned on the right side of the frame. The use of negative space on the left creates a balanced and harmonious composition. By placing the subject off-centre, the composition adheres to the rule of thirds, which often results in a more dynamic and interesting photograph. In the tighter crop, the details are more ‘exposed’ let’s say, and by reducing the negative space the viewers attention is more intensely focused on the Hoverfly. The mood of a photograph can also change with a tighter crop, it feels more intense and personal compared to the more relaxed and spacious feel of the original composition. Both have their merits and uses. However, a tighter crop can also reveal possible negative effects to the keen photographers eye. Noise in the image is instantly exposed and magnified with a tighter crop, as is diffraction. This ultimately makes the image less sharp, and yes whilst more may be in ‘focus’ the resulting image will be soft. A tighter crop may also limit the amount of context to the photograph, and this can effect the overall story and mood of the image. It can remove the narrative in some ways. A little half marathon after work this evening! With each split the pace and intensity increases, as does the heart rate, starting in HR zone 1, ending on Zone 5. Nasal breathing until the last 1,000 meters where it’s all out!! (Big sweaty bald head as proof) In 3 weeks I’ll be doing this twice a day, in the ocean off the west coast of Scotland, circling the Isle of Mull to raise funds and awareness for men’s mental health charity ‘Andy’s Man Club’ Whilst the awareness surrounding mental health has increased, the action to tackle hasn’t, so clubs like Andy’s Man Club are vital in supporting mental wellbeing!
