In 1993, a shocking photograph from Somalia exposed a darker side of a mission that was originally created to protect civilians. The image shows Belgian paratroopers serving under the United Nations Operation in Somalia II (UNOSOM II) holding a young Somali child above a fire. The mission had been launched after years of civil war, famine, and political collapse left Somalia facing a devastating humanitarian crisis. International troops arrived with the goal of securing aid routes, protecting relief workers, and helping restore stability. However, the reality on the ground became far more complicated. Peacekeepers operated in a country devastated by war, where distrust between foreign troops and local communities grew. Several incidents involving the mistreatment of Somali civilians began to surface, including accusations against members of the Belgian contingent. This photograph became one of the most infamous examples. The soldiers involved said they were attempting to scare the child after accusing him of stealing, but the image caused international outrage. To many people, it represented a serious violation of the trust placed in soldiers who were supposed to protect vulnerable communities. The controversy did not end with this photo. 🇺🇸 🇵🇸 Sama Safi, a 20-year-old American citizen and honors psychology student at Birzeit University, remains in Israeli detention after soldiers seized her from her family’s home near Ramallah at 3 a.m. on June 2, with lawmakers warning her life is at risk. Safi, whose family lives in Florida, was taken without charge and transferred to Ofer prison, then to the Moscovia interrogation center in Jerusalem, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society. Her family says she has a chronic condition that causes fevers up to 105°F and requires daily medication and a quarterly injection she travels abroad to receive. She was one of five Palestinian women detained that week, including two members of the Palestinian women’s national football team. The Israeli military said the women were suspected of “promoting terrorist activities.” Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Sen. Chris Van Hollen have both demanded her release. “I am really sick and tired of the Israeli government taking American taxpayer dollars and then mistreating Americans,” Van Hollen said. Israel has not told her family or the U.S. embassy where she is being held. Rep. Tlaib said, “Her life is at risk—our government must free her now!”

This is Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. He was fatally shot by ICE agents in Houston this past week, on Tuesday, after being profiled. DHS said he tried to ram his van into them - witnesses, undocumented, say that's not what happened. They have been detained by ICE and have now have received papers to self deport - they are the only people who can testify to what ICE did to Salgado. If you know the names Alex Pretti and Renee Good - you need to know Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Keith Porter, a black man killed by an off-duty ICE agent on January Ist of this year. ICE has the authority to kill anyone - they have complete impunity and they are showing it to us everyday.
