One of the things I’ve been talking about with VRU Standalone is that the goal is to downplay the VR side of the experience and aim this at people without VR gear. It’s basically like I’m bottling up the most interesting parts of social VR subculture and serving it to a much wider audience. I’ve been running events in the social VR scene for 7 years now and I’ve seen and lived it in ways few have. I know what makes this kind of scene tick. While the majority of users will be on desktop, the event staff and DJs will be in full body with the best gear available. There’s something really interesting about strutting your stuff with custom avatars and full body tracking in front of an audience that might not even know this tech or culture exists. We’ll probably reach a wider audience of people who would never touch VRChat, then send them down the rabbit hole of VR rave culture, headset or not. It’s two clicks to get into this 18+ adult Steam application. That’s the pitch, that’s the angle, that’s the idea.
