"What's a good, healthy, resting heart rate?" Short answer: Under 50bpm Longer answer... This massive study on the relationship between RHR and all-cause mortality (cmaj.ca/content/188/3/…) found a linear increase in risk of death of 9% for every 10bpm increase, i.e. someone with a resting heart rate of 75bpm has a ~30% greater chance of dying.. from anything.. than someone with a resting heart rate of 45bpm! Not coincidentally, this sub 50bpm also lines up nicely, based on my data, with a VO2max of >50 ml/kg/min and a max METs of 14+ -- both shown to be independent predictors of longevity in other papers, e.g. Kokkinos et al. (2022) showed a four-fold(!) decreased risk of death for those who could achieve 14METs in an exercise test, vs the lowest category! So, if in doubt, the answer is always 50 😊 Under 50 beats per minute resting heart rate Above 50ml/kg/min VO2max. That's where you want to be.
