Work on intersection of climate, water, ecology and society. Climate justice is social justice. No such thing as natural disasters. Silver linings spell hope!

📉 Dr. Imran Khalid questioned the effectiveness of current subsidies: * 💰 Rs. 200B fertilizer subsidy annually * 👤 Only ~Rs. 74/month benefit per person in a family of five * 🏭 40% of mills owned by politicians, controlling ~50% of the market He urged phasing out regressive subsidies and redirecting funds toward climate adaptation and nutrition. #ConsultationFoodSystemstransformation #NutritionForAll @imran2u @FoodSecurityPK @WHOPakistan @UNICEF_Pakistan @FAOPakistan

I have seen this picture cross my feed many times, and every single time it pulls me up short. His little blue lunchbox, the sneakers that are probably a tad too big because he would grow into them, the straps for his glasses so that he didn’t lose them, his checkered shirt that his little hands might have stumbled over in trying to make sure he got every button right, or perhaps his mother bent down to help him with; his mother who he waves goodbye to, who he loved and who loved him so deeply.

@zuhair_abbasi Can't speak to this statement. However, one thing is for sure, the Pakistani Government isn't one of them!

The number of solar and net-metering experts in Pakistan. Mind-boggling.

@Razarumi Pakistan’s clean energy shift was largely organic, driven by an indigenous solar push despite government policy. Yet the state claims full credit at climate conferences. Halting this indigenous push will, no doubt, damage our credibility when we seek mitigation finance.

Pathetic. This is a blow to Pakistan’s clean-energy shift. Penalizes solar users to shield corrupt independent power producers (IPPs), masks grid inefficiencies/ theft, and forget about the much needed power-sector reform.
Omer Azhar@OmerAzhar96

Millions of families spent their savings going solar to escape high bills. The government betrayed them by changing rules. Now it buys your power cheap (around Rs10) and sells it back expensive (around Rs45). Same unit, 4x the price. You invest. They extract. Daylight robbery.

@umairjav @rogueonomist Moreover it is asinine to suggest that "no one needs surplus electricity from solar." No one needs it? Translation: we are locked into inflexible, dollarized PPAs and now daytime solar is exposing how badly we designed the system.

@umairjav @rogueonomist Unfortunately, @rogueonomist is clueless. Real issue isn’t rooftop solar owners. It is the inefficiency, circular debt, and rentseeking behavior across the power sector. He speaks of UK & Cali. Let's do a full spectrum comparison, shall we. Let's start w/ regulatory transparency.

Net billing is the best decision ever. 1.5% of net metered households (yes, 1.5%) were being a massive burden for all other consumers. The marginal price of electricity when the sun shines is PKR 8/kWh. At night, the same is PKR/kWh. There is no economic reason why anyone should swap a unit available for PKT 8/kWh with PKR 28/kWh. Globally, utilities are moving towards the same model -- whether California, UK, India, Vietnam, or any other There is surplus supply of electricity when the sun shines -- no one needs it, deal with it
Awab Alvi@DrAwab

Pakistan’s shift from net metering to net billing in simple numbers: You consume 500 units from the grid; your solar exports 400 units. Old net metering: Bill = (500 − 400) × ~Rs33 ≈ Rs3,300 New net billing: Buy 500 × Rs33 ≈ Rs16,500 Sell 400 × ~Rs10 ≈ Rs4,000 credit Final bill ≈ Rs12,500 Same solar. Very different bill. PMLN trapped us in terrible IPP deals (many involving corruption and cuts), and we’re still bleeding because of them. Thank you, Sharifistan.

In that moment I truly understood how important it is for every single road in our country to be converted into a signal free corridor. I pray this tragedy doesn’t befall a protocol laden Land Cruiser ever again #NeverAgain

Saw an unfortunate scene today, a green number plate Land Cruiser with 2 protocol vigos got stuck on a traffic signal in the industrial area. Only 5-6 vehicles infront but because of the divider they could not go anywhere, just stand there Security guys started having fits…

This is the best thing I've read about leadership recently. Causing me to re-evaluate some things that I've done / not done for a long time. Strongly recommend. nytimes.com/athletic/68528…

Karachi sends 416 million gallons of waste-untreated-into the Arabian Sea each day. That's like twenty-five thousand homes flushing straight into nature. No wonder our fish are swimming in poop, beaches stink, and climate's getting wrecked by all that rot. Wake up! Who has responsibility to fix this. Sindh government or Karachi government?
