In the first week of April 2018, I wrote a cold email to @Ankit_AGarg to learn more about @WakefitCo, a D2C mattress startup that seemed fascinating from the outside. The first call happened a few days later, alongside @InfiniChai (CR).
As I learnt more about Wakefit over the coming weeks, I realized that beyond the impressive product ratings and growth numbers, this company was driven by two founders who were constantly experimental, customer-obsessed, frugal, and most importantly, not afraid of failures. From the first call to partnering in the company’s first equity round, and now to witnessing their IPO, Wakefit has truly come a long way.
Ankit and CR started building Wakefit when the D2C playbooks barely existed in India. It was their unique early design choices that set them apart. Whether it was building their own (mega)factories, setting up a 100+ persons support team to educate the customer for a high value purchase, hiring primarily ex-entrepreneurs as the first set of functional leaders, or pioneering the 100-day return policy - there is a lesson in every decision.
Along the way, Wakefit navigated a hyper-competitive market, ventured into a complex online furniture business, and transformed into an omni-channel giant with 130+ stores, all while outperforming incumbents. The capital came, but so did the setbacks; this journey demanded relentless execution and deep persistence that few could pull off.
As the company concludes its journey in the private markets, I wish the great folks at Wakefit an amazing entry into the public markets. I am confident that their tenets of customer obsession, frugality and experimentation will only get stronger. I look forward to seeing what they achieve next (and really excited for the Jumbo store!).
