You may not have seen anything like this before. This is Danda Jatra of Odisha, one of the most intense and ancient forms of worship. It involves strict penance by devotees ("Danduas"). On the closing day, known as ‘Meru Jatra’, Danduas participate in ‘Kamana Ghar’ where a yajna pit is set up. The Pata Dandua (leader of the troupe) walks on burning coal before being hung upside down on the horizontal pole till a few drops of blood ooze out from his nostrils and fall into yagna pit for Maa Kali. The ‘Danduas’ undergo a lot of pain and hardship to appease the Goddess while others do it to show their gratitude to the Goddesses for having fulfilled their desires and pre-ordained vows or ‘Manasikas’.
