When you wait 12+ hours to see a doctor in A&E, remember that 12 other doctors applied to be that doctor and got turned away. Doctors are unemployed and cannot find work, whilst last night ambulances waited 6+ hours outside my A&E to be seen. That is why Doctors are striking.

just hire more GPs!!! why do you consistently refuse to fund the NHS! there are unemployed doctors out there desperate for jobs! they are moving to Australia because they can't work here!!!
Keir Starmer@Keir_Starmer

For too long people have had to sit on the phone endlessly on hold to their GP. It's infuriating. From now on, almost every GP practice in England will offer online consultations. This is how we're making our NHS fit for the future.

People in Belfast have the biggest of hearts and certainly have the capacity to care about several issues at once. It’s frankly insulting to suggest otherwise. As a place that benefited hugely from international solidarity during the peace process, only right we do the same
Chris Suitor GGG - SuitorBros@SuitorBrothers

I am totally at a loss with our councillors @belfastcc , both sides, and how this issue has again polarised our City. You should all be ashamed. While i totally sympathise, like any right minded human would, that there are many horrific conflicts going on around the world, and condemn every single one of them, Councils job should be to protect and endorse our own City. And its growth both economically and culturally. Divisive issues should avoided, as its causes more harm ‘here’ on our turf, than it does ‘Help’ on someone else’s. I love our wee City… and watching it implode governance wise, is something i though was in our past… #Belfast we have got to do better ❤️ The Business community is the life blood of all Cities, please embrace us! I want my kids to grow up in a better City than i did, but currently, BCC are doing their best to destroy it.

More than 7 million patients are stuck on waiting lists, yet medical students and doctors are facing unemployment. A recent @TheLancet study predicts the UK will be short of 11,000 consultant physicians by 2048. The government must act now to fix this crisis.

You’ve waited months for your operation. You’ve waited hours in A&E. And yet; thousands of doctors who want to become surgeons and emergency medics are being turned away. In 2025, Emergency Medicine had 5,081 applicants for only 357 posts; around 14 applicants for one post. 5,399 doctors applied for just 630 Core Surgical Training posts; a ratio of 8.57 to 1. These are doctors who’ve completed years of study and clinical training, passed rigorous exams, and are ready to serve patients. But the Government refuses to fund enough speciality training places for them. So while patients lie on trolleys in corridors and operations are cancelled, fully trained doctors are left without a pathway to specialise. This is a catastrophic failure of workforce planning. A deliberate Government imposed cap on doctor speciality training numbers that wastes talent, demoralises staff, and prolongs NHS waiting times. If the Government is serious about tackling long waiting lists and rebuilding the NHS, it must expand funded training posts and use the workforce we already have.

Addressing the competition ratios for specialty training prior to this years application cycle should be a key concern for @wesstreeting. Doctors are exiting medical school unable to progress in their careers and sadly even becoming unemployed. Radical change is needed.
Hugh Pym@BBCHughPym

Newly qualified doctors in their first year of practice in England have voted overwhelmingly for strike action over what they say is a lack of future training places. First-year resident doctors who are members of the BMA voted for action with 97% in favour on a turnout of 65%.

There’s a hidden crisis in the NHS. Fully qualified doctors are being left unemployed because the Government refuses to fund enough training places for them to become consultants or GPs. This year alone, there were 20,000 more applicants than available posts. At the same time, FY1 doctors carrying £100,000 of student debt earn just £18.62 an hour for life saving work. They’re asking for £22.67/hr, not overnight, but over time. The message from doctors is clear; we cannot fix the NHS while the Government blocks doctors from progressing and underpays those holding it together. @wesstreeting now faces a choice; fund training, fix pay, and end this crisis or the dispute will continue.

The internet shutdown in Afghanistan happened in real time in my online poetry class on Monday. The women's accounts dropped out one by one. The last to go was Neda. Just before her image froze, I promised to put her poem on Twitter. She's 11. Online was her last hope of education. @WRNAfghanistan
