פרדסן ושומר השער בין היש לאין - "הוֹן מֵהֶבֶל יִמְעָט, וְקֹבֵץ עַל יָד יַרְבֶּה"

$ZIM does not have debt. It has long term vessel leases, and those are very different. A simple analogy: imagine I rent a taxi for 14 years at $10,000 per year. I use that taxi to generate $15,000 per year in income. You wouldn’t call that lease “debt.” It’s a productive asset that generates cash. Now take it one step further. Most of ZIM’s vessel leases were signed several years ago, before today’s shortage of modern container ships. Because supply is now much tighter, those lease contracts have become far more valuable than when they were signed. Going back to the taxi example, imagine you locked in a 14 year lease at $10,000 per year. A few years later, taxi production collapses and there aren’t enough taxis available. New leases now cost $15,000 per year. Suddenly, your lease is an asset. It has economic value because you secured it at a price well below today’s market rate. That is similar to ZIM’s position. Many of its long term vessel leases were signed at rates that are now significantly below current market levels, making those contracts valuable economic assets rather than liabilities.
