Use your free will to convince yourself that hard determinism is probably true and whoever's annoying you this moment had no option but to.

He could speak 8 languages and they said he could recite all 37 of Shakespeare's plays from memory. An award winning playwright & stage artist and one of Satyajit Ray's favourite actors. Also one of India's finest comic actors in films like Golmaal, and Hirak Rajar Deshe. The irony is that the marvellous comic roles in Golmaal and other films, what most people outside remember him for, is what he regarded as the least important "I have developed a technique of shutting my mind off, switching it off, rather. I will not be able to tell you even the names of the films I have acted in or even the name of the character I have just finished shooting.” He was also a brilliant writer & regular theatre reviewer. “Mr.Dutt as Othello was rather a pitiable sight, with his voice gone, his breathing laboured and his bulk enormous.” This was Utpal Dutt reviewing his own stage performance using the pseudonym Iago. He also loved classical art and there is this wonderful story told by his daughter. "When we went to Italy, it meant we would have to spend at least one day on viewing each sculpture. We had hired the services of a guide. But, we found that Baba knew more about the place than the guide. The next day, the guide asked us if we would be ready to go on our own." A true renaissance man and a principled one, not scared to go to prison for his views. Utpal Dutt was truly one of our greats. 97th birth anniversary today.

i've been getting some good mileage lately out of thinking about hurt as being either clean or gunky it was scary and sad and hard when my dad had his stroke, but it was clean hurt, a clean wound. there was nothing we could have done to prevent it from happening in the moment & it was just one of those heartbreaking, unavoidable parts of being human things feel gunky when something is unresolved, or when the difficulty feels avoidable or unnecessary. being around people who don't handle their stress well can make a difficult situation feel gunky instead of clean. not communicating well, being avoidant about addressing friction, being lied to, all gunky - whether i'm the recipient or the cause of it. gunky hurt feels like there's a splinter causing the wound to fester and keeping it from healing, or a layer of shame or personal aggrievement coating the clean core like dirty oil over water being more conscious about the difference has been helping me process both kinds of hurt with more clarity, be more mindful about my own interactions with others (though always have work to do there) + guide people who care about me towards cleaner kinds of hurt (can't get rid of hurt entirely, but can take steps to make it feel like a good, very human kind of hurt) (thanks to @sergeantsup for nudging me to tweet about this haha i meant to ages ago but lost track of it!)

Gwyneth Paltrow gives off incredible loneliness as a performer. I know instinctually Margot never loved a boyfriend. In Seven it feels like she’s always been “new to a city”. I don’t buy her having a girls night crew in Two Lovers at all (in a way that serves the film). And Kay..

Very disappointed by the symbolism of last night’s dream. Just really obvious, derivative stuff.

To people asking what work 'ontological' is doing here, the answer is it slows the rhythm of an otherwise-too-jaunty sentence down a bit

End of an era! Idk how many of you have been in my car but it’s a fair chunk, and plenty more were following me in the early days when I’d post videos of me singing in it Goonda needed more in repairs than she cost to buy, so she was donated today 🥲 Grateful for all the singalongs, the road trips, the errands, the long phone calls while driving, and the occasional car naps that I got to share with so many of you wonderful humans
