Wheatfield Prison on the suburban edge of Clondalkin is classed as medium-security facility, sitting cheek by jowl with Cloverhill Remand Prison. Most people dont realise they share infrastructure and staff and Wheatfield serves as a kind of barometer of wider trends in Irish crime and the criminal justice system. Construction began in 1980 but it was originally envisioned as specialised spaces for young offenders (16–21) and a women’s prison not for the typical adult male lags. But as usual in our bananna republic bloating budgets, shifting political priorities and the realities of rising crime required a bit of cop on. Firstly the women’s facility never materialised. Then after almost a decade of construction, Wheatfield opened in 1989, now repurposed for adult male prisoners. Its hard to believe but it was actually viewed with optimism at the time. It became a fashionable backdrop in Irish television and film. An ITV drama show I`m proud ive never seen called The Governor in the 1990s featured it. And the absolute masterpiece (bleedin stop reading this now and watch all of it) Love/Hate in the 2010s utilised it perilious clinical corridors. Wheatfield was originally built for a few hundred inmates but the expansions were started quickly (if not finished as quick) and the lags got bunk beds and doubled-up cells. In fact at one stage while it was smaller than it is now prison once held around 689 inmates, more than double its original designed capacity. In the early 2000s a new block was added and education spaces were expanded, and even as late as the mid-2020s the Dáil were promising new wings and extra cells as part of a national effort. Proposals in 2025 targeted 100 additional places at Wheatfield, with a national plan of adding nearly 1,600 new cells added across the country by the end of the decade. The Office of the Inspector of Prisons’ unannounced inspection last year said overcrowding “blighting the daily lives of people living and working in this establishment,” and it "routinely exceeds safe capacity, forcing inmates to sleep on mattresses on the floor and staff to fill gaps with overtime". An internal audit later revealed shortcomings in drug testing and monitoring regimes. Now there are things the place can be proud of like educational and vocational programmes and its piloted Restorative Practices aimed at helping offenders confront the realities of their crimes and engage with victims. This year a record €527 million capital investment in the Irish Prison Service has been secured for new cell blocks and expanded accommodation at Wheatfield and across the nation’s prisons, part of a plan to deliver nearly 1,600 additional places by 2031. Personally Id rather see the money invested in preventing recidivism, freeing up cells by decriminalising non-violent crime and having judges who dont inexplicably protect paedophiles and certain demographics. That’s right John. Since 1989, no major new reservoir has been built in England by privatised water companies. Indeed, at least 35 reservoirs have been sold off since 2017. Maybe even you can see it’s now time for public ownership? ICYMI that’s not nationalisation.
