Symbolic closure of TASMAC liquor shops The order for the closure of 717 State-run liquor shops (TASMAC shops) located within 500 m of educational institutions and places of worship, in my opinion, is symbolic and would not, in any way, reduce alcohol consumption. The objective is only to remove the nuisance near schools and places of worship. A qualitative change can be assessed only if it is reflected in the sale of liquor. In the past, similar decisions made no difference. A person who drinks regularly will not even mind travelling 10 km to buy his favourite drink.
