The other thing, of course, is that compulsory, full preferential voting wrecks attempts at trying to take over an electorate (Australian lower house constituency) the way Gaza Independents have here. If an insurgent party is to win any House of Reps (or Senate for that matter) seats at all, it really does need broad popularity. One Nation has recently achieved that position (based only on polling, tho), while the Greens lost it at the last federal election.

Great essay by @SalemLola that I missed at the time. What nationalism scholar John Armstrong called the 'myth-symbolic complex' of national character and identity gave rise to and was reinforced by state interest in and genuine appreciation for the arts. engelsbergideas.com/notebook/the-p…

The PM and by extension the rest of the country (on the nightly news) getting to see that is actually useful. There was a literal punchup between pro-Albo and anti-Albo Muslims. That said, Lakemba Mosque is both notorious for its dickheads & a place whose bark is worse than its bite—the two Bondi killers were associates of Wissam Haddad, an unrelated figure.

"Hi, I just converted to Catholicism three seconds ago. I am now the ultimate authority on who is or isn't Christian. Please subscribe to my podcast where I'm going to talk about Israel and the Joooooz all the time while complaining it's illegal to talk about them. I have no discernible skills, no intelligence, and nothing original to add, but I'm going to talk about the Jooooz all day every day. If I criticize you, I'm just asking questions. If you criticize me, you're trying to silence me. Anyway, find me on Russia Today and Iranian State TV."

So the UK's 10-year gilt yield - the cost of government borrowing - is now up at 2008 levels. An 18-year high The difference is that, back then, UK national debt was 48pc of GDP, and now it's the best part of 100pc. So the debt service costs are much MUCH heavier. Of the £14.3bn the UK government borrowed in February alone, no less than £13bn of that was spent on interest on existing debts - a situation which is not only unsustainable, but very close to provoking a disastrous financial collapse. Yet still, our national discourse is all about more spending, more borrowing, more "state intervention". When is the Labour party – and much of the listless, unthinking rump of the UK's political and media class – going to start acknowledging reality? WHEN ....?

@TimONeill007 Fair enough. Another data point showing that irony and wryness aren't always easy to pick up on in text-based digital space.

Tell me you've not read past Dune without telling me (what OP describes ends up with hundreds of billions dead or subjugated in a religious war with Paul as messiah figure forging a new galactice empire around himself).
Carl Zha@CarlZha

I can't get over the fact that Dune is about an oppressed people fighting for their homeland, waging a jihad to bring down a hegemonic empire by threatening to cut off the flow of their most precious commodity after the empire had assassinated their religious leader's father.

@SteveDavies365 Agreed. Would just say that Netanyahu says that what he's describing is an unfortunate and sad reality, so not necessarily celebrating it.

@intothefuture45 Absolutely. However I'd argue that this line also partly contradicts the Old Testament - Deuteronomy 22:25 for example and also stories like those of Gideon where the message is that what matters is whether the Lord is with you, not the power you have or the ruthlessness.

@TimONeill007 Is this for me or the OP? If for me, would be genuinely interested to hear your take for where I'm wrong. Big fan of your work!

@SteveDavies365 Indeed, hence my second point: Jews don't believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ, so therefore don't follow his teachings. Old Testament 'eye for an eye' is very different to 'turn the other cheek'.

@intothefuture45 Indeed. However he quotes Durant because he agrees with the sentiment expressed, that force and ruthlessness are needed to resist evil. That may be true but it's not the Christian message, regardless of what Christians have actually done in practice.

Moynihan vs. Schlafly. This passage was written in 1980 and I find it amazing:

@si_rubinstein People have a) not heard of much less read Will Durant's work, and b) forget/ignore that Jews don't believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ. Mass public ignorance leading to medieval peasant-level outrage at Netanyahu quoting from a (non-religious) book.

Sorry is it the Christian contention now that Jesus would beat Genghis Khan IN THIS WORLD & that it’s deeply offensive to say otherwise?
