For more than 90 minutes at a Houston town hall Sunday, State Rep. James Talarico fielded questions on preserving voting rights, protecting Black farmers, supporting Black candidates and where he stands on issues ranging from public education funding to diversity, equity and inclusion. 🔗houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-t…

Totally smashed last year’s demand record here in Texas with 91 GW at peak today. To put it in perspective, all time records for some other areas: >California: 52.1GW (2022) >United Kingdom: 61.5GW (2007) >Australia: 39.6GW (2024) Also prices were low by almost any standard (~$50/MWh) during this time. This is what energy abundance looks like.
Doug Lewin@douglewinenergy

Air conditioning demand in extreme Texas heat pushed the ERCOT grid beyond 91 gigawatts today. Before yesterday, we had never exceeded 86 GW so this record shatters the old one. Note there was >20 GW of buffer, no energy emergency, no conservation call. #txlege #txenergy 1/

If DeSantis is “leaving without many friends” after he’s been the greatest Republican governor in the country for 8 years, one has to ask the question: why would he want those “friends”? The GOP doesn’t represent conservatives anymore. It represents its own interests. The answer of course is one of power. DeSantis cannot advance in the GOP without certain concessions, and it appears conceding his values to Trump and Susie’s vision for Florida is a large part of the price tag. I only respect him more for not giving into their bull.
Cryptid Politics@CryptidPolitics

New report from CNN details increasing isolation of Ron DeSantis in the GOP over his refusal to endorse frontrunner Byron Donalds: “Everybody has tried to talk sense into him, including the president. Ron is leaving without a lot of friends. There’s going to be a big effort to take the shine off of him and he won’t have a platform to defend himself." This comes as Byron Donalds made comments in recent days indicating he was looking forward to having DeSantis' support in the GE election against David Jolly.

I once visited a “farm” in the American southwest. It was owned by the Saudis. Pumped scarce groundwater to grow alfalfa that was shipped to Arabia to feed their dairy cows. The labor was all illegal Mexicans. This is who they are referencing when they say “our farmers”

@RyanMNeuhaus This is what most of our farmers are requesting. Perhaps you’re on the wrong side of this issue or with the Dems. Support our farmers.

I want Elon Musk to give Mel Gibson $100 million to film an Odyssey adaptation with painstakingly historically accurate ships, armour, weapons, and casting, with all dialogue taken straight from the original poem and delivered in Homeric Greek.

One thing that really frustrates me is when Tesla Self-Driving exits the carpool lane or express lane and then gets stuck in traffic. As I see everyone else whizzing by in the far left lane, I get extremely annoyed knowing I should be there too. Respect the settings please 🙏

Well the Elizabeth Warren housing bill has passed. Section 8 incoming to suburbs, Obama couldn't get this done but a Republican majority house and Senate can. Why vote Republican when Warren gets everything she wants.

TRUMP: “I will not sign the Housing Bill, which has been fully approved by Congress and sent to the White House in PROTEST over the fact that the United States Senate is not capable of passing the SAVE American Act."

“For me personally, it’s not like all that much is changing. It’s just another big tournament, to be honest.” USMNT star Christian Pulisic is on latest edition of GQ magazine. He knows people are excited about the World Cup, but he’s relaxed about it. “I get texts from my family and close friends—they're definitely all excited about it, for sure,” Pulisic said. “I mean, I feel like I’m constantly playing in big games. For me personally, it’s not like all that much is changing. It’s just another big tournament, to be honest. “A lot of people are trying to make it even more than it is. I get it, it’s a huge tournament [shrugs]. “I’m looking forward to it.” Let’s see if this relaxed attitude can ease pressure off of Pulisic and help him shine in the World Cup.

A while ago I had been posting about trying to decide which screenless fitness tracker to get. I was torn between the Fitbit air and the Whoop. I've been using both. Which did I decide was better? For ME personally, the Whoop. For a beginner or someone looking to be more casual about training and tracking, the Fitbit air is better. The Fitbit air has everything you'd really want with a basic tracker. Steps, workouts, RHR, calories burned estimates (Trackers aren't accurate, but they're repeatable), sleep time/quality, Spo2, and HRV. It's a pretty nice tracker actually. I even tried the Google health free trial and if I were a beginner, I'd find it very helpful. It analyzes the data and makes it digestible for someone who doesn't really know what they're looking for. The Whoop give a lot of data. So much data that a beginner might not really appreciate most of it or understand how to interpret it. Google healths coach is more engaging and acts as a coach while the Whoop more just shows you the data and explains it. I'm not interested in having a personal coach. A beginner could greatly benefit from it. It has a lot of interesting features that may be niche and not entirely necessary, but if you're into fitness, these are VERY cool. While doing everything the fitbit does, it also gives you biological age vs your real age. For instance it has my biological age 6 years younger than my physical age. How useful is that? Not entirely, but you can watch it improve (or tank) with lifestyle changes. It tracks vo2 as well, which was relatively accurate compared to my actual test and trends the same. Definitely not 100% accurate, but a good baseline. The premium "Life" subscription adds on a couple of features that I really enjoy too. One is blood pressure monitoring which is still in beta that I've found to be a little bit lower than me checking with my cuff, but it's also repeatable. The other is ECG readings. I think the Fitbit air is absolutely great for novices or people who don't want to really be an obnoxious nerd about this stuff like me, which is most people. It's also much cheaper. Around 100 dollars with no subscription needed to use it. The added coach is around 10 dollars a month which may be worth it for beginners, but after a while you'll be able to understand what everything means. The Whoop is for people who want as much data as possible to improve on. It could be overwhelming for beginners. It also has a larger profile than the fitbit air but it's not uncomfortable. The fitbit wins in comfort by a bit, however. The big downside? It's overpriced and it's a year subscription. The equipment is "free" with a subscription. The subscriptions range from around 200 to the "life" subscription I have for 359 dollars a year. Is the extra money worth it? For me, absolutely. If you're on a budget and still want a Whoop, get the "Peak" plan. It's a much better value. Overall, it costs more than it should and the fact that its a yearly subscription is silly, but if you have the budget, its worth it. I made a training program and diet for a friend and have been adjusting it every couple weeks, he's down 75 lbs so far. He has a crappy fitbit version so I'm surprising him with a Whoop premium life plan for hitting 75 lbs lost and sticking to it. He's absolutely been killing it and can utilize this now that he's so dedicated. Another 60 lbs and he'll be at his goal weight, so this can be more motivation. Do you guys have a preference between them?
