I was laid off today. I spent the last 2 years as the only UI Engineer on Festival, implementing new features like Local Multi-player, Festival Menu, Calibration, and new game modes. I dove into focus and input issues, often helping other teams with their issues as well.

in the event people don't get it - I do know they can avoid layoffs they usually CHOOSE not to and almost always the top % don't take cuts either
I'm just very tired as someone who worked 10 years in this industry.

If a game like Fortnite that prints money can't avoid layoffs, the industry is doomed at this point.
It is very sad to see this happen over and over with studios. If you're a mutual from Epic affected, hmu and I'll do my best to help you job hunt.

EPIC GAMES LAYS OFF OVER 1,000 EMPLOYEES "Today we’re laying off over 1000 Epic employees. I'm sorry we're here again. The downturn in Fortnite engagement that started in 2025 means we're spending significantly more than we're making, and we have to make major cuts to keep the company funded. This layoff, together with over $500 million of identified cost savings in contracting, marketing, and closing some open roles puts us in a more stable place."

My role at Epic Games is at risk. The past 5 and a half years as social media manager from Mediatonic to Epic, Fall Guys to LEGO Fortnite to Fortnite and everything in between, has been a wild ride. And how mega to be able to say my last hoorah was working on Game of Thrones!!

some people & big companies act like it’s impossible not to use generative ai. what happened to hiring real talent???? real actors, real artists/illustrators, real photographers, etc. or at least, if you need a cheaper option, buy stock videos, photos, illustrations (non AI ones)
