A5 Social and emotional support needs to be offered to both the bully and the victim. Students can be empowered via decision making about the types of services they need. In addition to immediate support from in-school resources such as the school counselor and social workers, parents and students should gain access to outside counseling, community service, training, and courses, and the communication lines must stay open throughout the entire process. Teachers might also require extra support; for example, they may have witnessed an incident that was triggering or traumatizing and need help processing it and learn how to better navigate a similar situation in the future. @RutgersAltRoute #TeacherEd #SafeSchools

Students can bully others, they can be bullied, or they may witness bullying. For our final question, think about the social and emotional needs of those involved in bullying #TeacherEd #SafeSchools

A4 It takes a lot of discernment to know how to handle a given situation. There are cultural, socioeconomic, developmental, and psychological factors at play. Using a situation to create a teachable moment for all students is one way of leveraging one’s role as a teacher. Harassment, intimidation, and bullying are real problems in a system that strives for equitable education. However, responding merely punatively does not go to the root of the problem. We need to reach into the hearts and minds of our students, parents, administrators, and selves and truly dig deep. @RutgersAltRoute #TeacherEd #SafeSchools

A3 I mainly communicate verbally with homeroom teachers, the other music teacher, and the other arts teachers. We help each other understand our students better. When it comes to communicating with parents, I mainly use ClassDojo owing to the translation capabilities. However, I could do better with this, and plan to get more organized about my communications with parents. @RutgersAltRoute #TeacherEd #SafeSchools

@RutgersAltRoute A2 Like me, a lot of my students come from countries where they were not exposed to technology. I help them as best I can, and my empathy goes a long way. The added language barrier does not help. #TeacherEd #EdTech

@RutgersAltRoute A5 Be transparent about assessment. Put the reigns in students’ hands via goal setting that is growth-oriented and peer collaboration. Make it more formative and less about grades. Consistency, rubrics, and grading have been challenging for me. #altrted #TeacherEd #GrowthMindset

@RutgersAltRoute A4 Music. Feedback should be positive & focused on how a student has grown / could grow. Ex. A student who matches pitch well sings an incorrect pitch. Ask the student to articulate their thought process (metacognitive). Offer different strategies/approaches. Consider mechanics.
