Today is a monumentous day for quantum computing and cryptography. Two breakthrough papers just landed (links in next tweet). Both papers improve Shor's algorithm, infamous for cracking RSA and elliptic curve cryptography. The two results compound, optimising separate layers of the quantum stack. The results are shocking. I expect a narrative shift and a further R&D boost toward post-quantum cryptography. The first paper is by Google Quantum AI. They tackle the (logical) Shor algorithm, tailoring it to crack Bitcoin and Ethereum signatures. The algorithm runs on ~1K logical qubits for the 256-bit elliptic curve secp256k1. Due to the low circuit depth, a fast superconducting computer would recover private keys in minutes. I'm grateful to have joined as a late paper co-author, in large part for the chance to interact with experts and the alpha gleaned from internal discussions. The second paper is by a stealthy startup called Oratomic, with ex-Google and prominent Caltech faculty. Their starting point is Google's improvements to the logical quantum circuit. They then apply improvements at the physical layer, with tricks specific to neutral atom quantum computers. The result estimates that 26,000 atomic qubits are sufficient to break 256-bit elliptic curve signatures. This would be roughly a 40x improvement in physical qubit count over previous state-of-the-art. On the flip side, a single Shor run would take ~10 days due to the relatively slow speed of neutral atoms. Below are my key takeaways. As a disclaimer, I am not a quantum expert. Time is needed for the results to be properly vetted. Based on my interactions with the team, I have faith the Google Quantum AI results are conservative. The Oratomic paper is much harder for me to assess, especially because of the use of more exotic qLDPC codes. I will take it with a grain of salt until the dust settles. → q-day: My confidence in q-day by 2032 has shot up significantly. IMO there's at least a 10% chance that by 2032 a quantum computer recovers a secp256k1 ECDSA private key from an exposed public key. While a cryptographically-relevant quantum computer (CRQC) before 2030 still feels unlikely, now is undoubtedly the time to start preparing. → censorship: The Google paper uses a zero-knowledge (ZK) proof to demonstrate the algorithm's existence without leaking actual optimisations. From now on, assume state-of-the-art algorithms will be censored. There may be self-censorship for moral or commercial reasons, or because of government pressure. A blackout in academic publications would be a tell-tale sign. → cracking time: A superconducting quantum computer, the type Google is building, could crack keys in minutes. This is because the optimised quantum circuit is just 100M Toffoli gates, which is surprisingly shallow. (Toffoli gates are hard because they require production of so-called "magic states".) Toffoli gates would consume ~10 microseconds on a superconducting platform, totalling ~1,000 sec of Shor runtime. → latency optimisations: Two latency optimisations bring key cracking time to single-digit minutes. The first parallelises computation across quantum devices. The second involves feeding the pubkey to the quantum computer mid-flight, after a generic setup phase. → fast- and slow-clock: At first approximation there are two families of quantum computers. The fast-clock flavour, which includes superconducting and photonic architectures, runs at roughly 100 kHz. The slow-clock flavour, which includes trapped ion and neutral atom architectures, runs roughly 1,000x slower (~100 Hz, or ~1 week to crack a single key). → qubit count: The size-optimised variant of the algorithm runs on 1,200 logical qubits. On a superconducting computer with surface code error correction that's roughly 500K physical qubits, a 400:1 physical-to-logical ratio. The surface code is conservative, assuming only four-way nearest-neighbour grid connectivity. It was demonstrated last year by Google on a real quantum computer. → future gains: Low-hanging fruit is still being picked, with at least one of the Google optimisations resulting from a surprisingly simple observation. Interestingly, AI was not (yet!) tasked to find optimisations. This was also the first time authors such as Craig Gidney attacked elliptic curves (as opposed to RSA). Shor logical qubit count could plausibly go under 1K soonish. → error correction: The physical-to-logical ratio for superconducting computers could go under 100:1. For superconducting computers that would be mean ~100K physical qubits for a CRQC, two orders of magnitude away from state of the art. Neutral atoms quantum computers are amenable to error correcting codes other than the surface code. While much slower to run, they can bring down the physical to logical qubit ratio closer to 10:1. → Bitcoin PoW: Commercially-viable Bitcoin PoW via Grover's algorithm is not happening any time soon. We're talking decades, possibly centuries away. This observation should help focus the discussion on ECDSA and Schnorr. (Side note: as unofficial Bitcoin security researcher, I still believe Bitcoin PoW is cooked due to the dwindling security budget.) → team quality: The folks at Google Quantum AI are the real deal. Craig Gidney (@CraigGidney) is arguably the world's top quantum circuit optimisooor. Just last year he squeezed 10x out of Shor for RSA, bringing the physical qubit count down from 10M to 1M. Special thanks to the Google team for patiently answering all my newb questions with detailed, fact-based answers. I was expecting some hype, but found none.

Jaden Ivey on IG Live: "All I'm preaching is about Jesus Christ and they waived me. They say I'm crazy, I'm psycho…God let these things happen for a reason…When I came into the league all I wanted to do was win championships, get millions of bucks, get that next contract, get all them cars, that's all I wanted–until the Lord showed me. What good is it to gain the world & forfeit your soul? What good is it to not follow the Lord, obey his commandments?…You only get to drive the Ferrari for the time being…when has anyone driven a Ferrari for 10 hours? No one…you only drive it for however long…What good is it gonna do for y'all on Judgment Day if you don't know the Lord Jesus Christ and obey his commandments?…It's not gonna do no good doing your will and trying to win championships…that's where many stumble…That's why you got Steph Curry…he don't know Jesus, and I pray he comes to the truth, that him & his family be saved in Jesus name…All them rings he got…all them rings LeBron got, Michael Jordan got, all them people in the HOF who don't know Jesus Christ, it's not gonna matter on Judgment Day…They gonna try to stop me but I'm not, I'm gonna be speaking the Truth…That's why everybody around me turning their back on me, because of my faith…I didn't get myself waived–I was in the gym today rehabbing…doing my job…doing whatever they said to do…and they kicked me out. And I'm sure every NBA team gonna say the same thing: 'We don't want him, he's too religious for us'…I hope you turn to Jesus Christ…that you can be forgiven of your sin…we've all sinned…there has to be an atonement, there has to be something…God is faithful to do it but…you have to believe…Jesus gives you power over the devil…please turn to Jesus Christ…it's not his will that these players perish in the NBA…they searching for something they not gonna achieve…they got all these goals…they need to be searching what's the next goal I can do for the Lord Jesus Christ…you gotta have faith in Jesus…They gonna cancel me I'm telling you…This word is gonna be preached…He's gonna come like a thief in the night for those who don't believe…nothing good in the world besides following Jesus Christ…Y'all think y'all hidden…He sees the things you're doing at night…the pornography…the fornication…the lying…the physical abuse…the fighting––" Flight attendant: "I'm sorry to bother you…are you on your mobile?…it interferes with the communication" Ivey: "May Jesus bless y'all…My god's willing to save the dirtiest of sinners…May you be blessed in Jesus name"

This whole thing gets even funnier when you realize that miladies did nothing wrong and if anything, they were caught in the crossfire of a battle it was not their own and got their peaceful life disrupted by the Ethereum delinquents. Milady

I'm the rare (only?) person on both camps, the milady mind virus & those having an immune reaction to it rather than painting one side as boomers, i see eth core devs as being more substance & less noise while miladys are at minimum equal noise & substance combining both forces is a deadly concoction to take over the world, with one side conquering new territory with cryptographic breakthroughs & the other using it for meaningful discourse the general difference in communities is maybe why we've seen such a unique line of attack on milady: they don't ship as much as they should to advance the ideals they profess to hold while miladys pushback is that eth core devs aren't cypherpunk enough? i don't think either side has a really compelling position at this point, the good part is i can see grudging respect develop all the miladys love @lightclients meme game & consider him as one of them even if he doesnt know it yet 😛 @banteg actually shipped code to cancel milady from the timeline, which is a first in history 🤠 @apoorveth won an exemption on his cancel list since he forked the repo to build the milady amplifier the only actual rancor was using charlie's doxxed name, that's not something we do around these parts the discussions around what it means to be a cypherpunk is a breath of fresh air into etheruem both groups believe ethereum is the one shot at saving the world & its a privilege to work here ethereum is healing believe in somETHing milady

crypto started out as a cypherpunk dream, but what started out as a powerful beast akin to a wolf is now as inbred as a fucking french bulldog. it's a caricature of what it was; what it could be. there are very few people left keeping those cypherpunk values alive... and they're all milady. there is a reason Vitalik chose a milady PFP, it's because the core ethos of milady resonates with his personal cypherpunk values. the bored ape mind can't comprehend it. the cryptopunk mind can't comprehend it either. they all forgot the roots of the space they spend the majority of their time in. in fact, most of them never cared about any values; they cared about money, fame, and optics. their "personal brand" is more important than anything else. the majority of people going against milady can barely spell cypherpunk, much less comprehend cypherpunk values. even when the goldenlight shines upon them, they choose to remain in darkness. they will use AI to do the thinking for them and write articles about how "remilia is 60 years behind" because remilia built on a wide body of philosophy. "grok please try to cancel them but don't use any problematic language because i don't want bad optics for my personal brand" they don't have their own opinions because they are afraid how people might react to them. not being cancelled is more precious than standing up for what they once believed to be right, so they self censor out of fear of being cancelled. they willingly turn themselves into NPCs. they don't speak out against censorship or digital IDs. they cheer on corporate adoption and VC money. many of them think tornado cash is bad and ross deserves to be in jail because it would be "bad optics" for their "personal brand" if they chose to support something that might be perceived as problematic. and yet they have the audacity to yap about what cypherpunk is or isn't. they fear milady because the people in remiliasphere aren't afraid to stand up for what they believe in, even if that means being cancelled. they didn't get the memo; the cancelled will inherit the earth. the post-cancelled ascend, and the never-cancelled are left behind to rot. they "value free speech" but only as long as it's "not problematic". they are the first ones to go on a cancel crusade against people who truly support free speech. they have to virtue signal because they've been conditioned to do so. burning bridges because of having their own opinion scares them to death. half the people who are against the mandate and having a common vision for the culture being built most likely didn't mind it in the past. they type things like "mandate is bad, the world computer having a cypherpunk culture you have to align with is bad" while drinking coffee from their corporate mug that has their company values printed on it. the mandate never even mentions milady, but it's "problematic" because milady shares the same cypherpunk values. and milady is problematic because they once scrolled through the 2022 cancel and haven't bothered to look further. they respond with "uhmm i don't think the miladytruth.org blog is a valid source", while their opinion is formed around a blog article based on a debunked twitter thread. if you try to have a discussion with any of those people they suddenly fail to articulate any actual argument or criticism. and then they go private. "You’re unable to view this Post because this account owner limits who can view their Posts." the default dog fears the wolf that is milady

You guys are new here so allow me to explain: Milady is a trojan horse pushing all of its values entirely through the act of propagation, in the combination of the VPL/post-authorship/netspi ethos and by being post-cancelled, it contains free speech, free association, freedom of thought, free information and free markets— you cannot accept milady without accepting all 5. The eyes are memetic malware distributing theory and praxis, manifesto and mail bomb, both just as effectively through an unsuspecting and a suspecting host, because its method is infection on a host community until it reaches inflection point and activates latent censorious scapegoating through the embedded cancel rabbithole and unrolls the entire body of thought and lore, in often multiple successive self-reckoning, producing infinite new martyrs for truth against the mob’s social mimesis. Because milady is a trojan horse psycho-stenographically encoded with its permanent insurgency, you cannot co-opt it and you cannot dilute it, any attempts to do so will only help it spread further until it becomes so common its revolution is the background radiation your children are borne into— just the same as the equally radical, revolutionary technologies of cryptocurrency, personal computing and the world wide web—and you will all live under and enjoy the freedoms milady fought for. There is no meme, I love you.
