@WinterSportsLaw Serious question how would that even work?? If a player gets signed for multiple years and the coach that signed him gets fired then the new coach is just fucked with a bunch of players he never wanted and the players are stuck with a coach they didn’t commit too that

Yes, employment agreements would be a big improvement over NIL licensing agreements for both sides. And schools need to be willing to commit to athletes for multiple years. The vast majority of athlete agreements are still only one year.
Scott Schneider@EdLawDude

If any company in America had a recurring problem with highly valued personnel leaving annually for competitors, the solution would be obvious: use multi-year employment agreements with meaningful restrictions. This is not some unsolvable problem.

@OBCHOOPS @NILnotNLI Not really bevause NIL is funded through a third party collective. No money used to pay players through NIL is publicly funded jts all privately funded and donor money. No matter how much a school spends on NIL it doesn’t affect the University athletic budget

@iowaddced @NILnotNLI It’s just not them, other schools are starting to cut Olympic sports also. There are D1 schools cutting sports. NIL is definitely going to be a driving force behind some of this. Maybe not at Mercyhurst but will happen at others.

🚨 ANOTHER NCAA OLYMPIC SPORTS PROGRAM ELIMINATED 🚨 Division 1 Mercyhurst University has announced today it is discontinuing its Men's Ice Hockey program. The school refers to the slashing as: "strategic program adjustments to strengthen future growth" Tell that to the kids.

@asbraner Pryce made the best decision for his career, 1 he never wanted to go to Iowa, 2 if he stayed he wouldn’t be where he is today he would just be a 2nd option to stirtz in no way would staying at Iowa benefit him

@asbraner ? He made the right decision for his career. If he stayed at Iowa he would be a second hand man to stritz and have no draft stock, McCollums system plays very slow so the only guy getting a lot of shots is stirtz if he stayed he wouldn’t be where he is today

@iowaddced @On3 @RossDellenger Toosii also has little to no experience with football as well💯 I mean apparently the judge didn’t think TC played 5 years of college sports, that’s why he’s playing in fall 2026‼️

@SlaterKinnick_ @MartinRiggsDawg They might win more but for his career he definitely made the right move. Iowas second leading scorer averages 10ppg McCollums system would have him be a second hand man to stirtz especially since they play so slow only so many points out there and stritz would take most of them

@MartinRiggsDawg Meh, I don’t blame him for leaving after his coach was fired but I truly think his place at Iowa would allow him to be as important as he is for Nebraska Him and Stirtz would have won a lot of games, and he’d be the guy next year that we build around Glad Iowa came out on top

In the fog of celebration I forgot that Pryce Sandfort left Iowa and transferred to Nebraska (which lost to Iowa tonight in the Sweet 16) Sorry Pryce! You made the best decision for yourself, and Iowa still… Iowa’d Storybook ending for a storybook season!

@SlaterKinnick_ I’ve never understood this move. So your mediocre coach got fired finally. So instead of playing for a new Iowa coach you just play for a different new coach out of state.

@OBCHOOPS @NILnotNLI This has nothing to do with NIL or anything Mercyhurst has an NIL budget of $0 if they cut a sport it’s bevause they actually couldnt afford it they play in a hs level football stadium nil is the least of their concerns

@NILnotNLI What did they think was going to happen. Did they not see the law of unintended circumstances. Many colleges/universities don’t have the $$ to suppprt big sports and the non-revenue sports. Could be the fall of college sports in general.

@marshallhawk1 @gymwarrior He would be fine but he wouldn’t be able to average 20ppg like he is now if he stayed at Iowa he would have no draft stock and less money why would he stay at Iowa especially since he’s been a Nebraska guy his whole life?

@MustacheDLuffy @NextNetworkJosh What is this proving? They would be a favorite over Wisconsin, UCLA, and OSU on a neutral court. Purdue went 13-7 and is a 2 seed. UCLA goes 13-7 and is a 7 seed. Is Purdue on a Cinderella run?

@avidbasketball0 @WinterSportsLaw what do you mean the top 1-5% are getting all the benefit? 2 of my hs teammates in the 2026 class are both ranked 1,500-2,000 in the nation both are committed to power 4 schools and are getting paid very close to $100,000 as 3 stars🤷🏿 seems like a good deal to me

@iowaddced @WinterSportsLaw I don't know how its going to work but i imagine players get a representative ,ncaa does the same and they hash out something sensible. Right now the top 1-5% are obtaining 90% of the benefit and a world where that trickles down a little more and puts rules in place isnt crazy?

@avidbasketball0 @WinterSportsLaw How would a union benefit the players then? It would put a salary cap which would limit how much some players earn, it would also possibly force players to stay at a school for multiple years. Can you tell me how a union would benefit anyone? I just don’t see how it does

It’s a bit naive to believe college athletics will reign itself in. The “student athlete” model has been long gone, well before the House settlement & schools paying athletes. Have to either stop operating pro teams or operate them like pro teams. Can’t stay in limbo world.
