Navel orangeworm egg laying activity in almonds has been going up - not surprising for given the high overwintering populations and the prevalence of mummy nuts out there. Keep track of what’s happening throughout the season is crucial. Numbers from Modesto area.

@UCANRpam @UCANRpam, you are overthinking it 😄 we use window screen to glue almonds to create portable nut strands. We can put these out in the field treated with insecticide and untreated control. NOW natural population infests them. and we compare infestation rates among treatments.

@IPMCorner Are the almonds wrapped in chickenwire to prevent wildlife from eating them?

@jen_l_espinoza They are immature stages of the False Chinch bug. They tend to aggregate in the area near the homes and sometimes in plants nearby, especially when the vegetation they feed on dries out. More info here: ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/…

Navel orangeworm counts are going up. When there are “hullsplit” almonds which release volatiles that is attractive to gravid NOW females for egg laying. Both NOW activity and hullsplit progression are two critical factors to time insecticide spray effectively. @ucanr @UCIPM

Applying entomopathogenic nematodes for flatheaded borer, Chrysobothris mali, in walnuts. This pest has been damaging several walnut orchards each specially when trees are little stressed, sunburn, and may not have best growth. You may not detect the stress level visually!@ucanr

@JoeDelBosque @moniquejrivera It’s an advanced nymphal stage of Say stink bug or Chlorochroa. They are polyphagous. We found them in almond/pistachio orchards occasionally. They are not green stink bugs mwhich is much bigger problem in nut orchards.

Entomologists! Can someone help me identify this bug? I’m finding them on our melons. ⁦@moniquejrivera⁩
