@lilianedwards @BertuzLuca Tx. In my view, it is drafted to give them a lot of wriggle room, unsurprisingly. It would be nice to think they would make a serious attempt at AI policy, harking back to Harold Wilson's white heat of technology, but the undertones of online safety language are worrying.

@Iptegrity @BertuzLuca Yes that's how I read it too otoh there is separately a story of putting the AISI on a statutory front which as I already said elsewhere is if not last of our worries pretty far down the line

The EU's AI Office might not be the only regulator for powerful #AI models for long. The UK's Labour Party, the favorite in the upcoming elections, vows to pass "binding regulation on the handful of companies developing the most powerful AI models."

@JoeBambridge1 Sadly the SNP amendment was never going to be adopted. But there is a different story at play here.

Just 38 MPs (mostly from the SNP) voted against a massive expansion in surveillance powers in the Investigatory Power (Amendment) Bill. Labour wholeheartedly backed it. More proof that civil liberty arguments have almost zero cut through with the current crop of MPs.

@Cyberleagle @guy_herbert Indeed, I was referring to the lobbying. It has the hallmarks of a well-orchestrated campaign. But it's also true the taxpayers are paying for the consultation exercise...and regulatory implementation.

@hutko Thank you. A great intervention. Should be required reading for anyone following the #e2ee debate.

I think if the printing press were a recent invention, in today's climate we'd be in the grip of a moral panic about how it allows anyone to print anything they want & that it needs strict licensing to operate one.

"We rely on political leaders to take action to end violence against women and girls, and the misogyny that underpins it. It is vital that spiking survivors see ministers treating the subject seriously and not downplaying the reality so many women face." mirror.co.uk/news/politics/…

The European Parliament's political agreement for online child safety measures without survellance has today been formally adopted. A very good balance that aims to provide a way around the deadlock. #e2ee @EP_Justice My post here: iptegrity.com/index.php/euro…

@RussBeeby @EP_Justice Can now confirm a requirement for mandatory age verification for app stores was deleted. It's all in multiple documents and a bit messy, so I had been relying on other sources, which I would not do usually.

@RussBeeby @EP_Justice It is not mandatory for app stores and private messaging services. I 'll see if I can correct that.

@RussBeeby @EP_Justice Other information suggests no mandatory age verification for users of communication services. This needs some clarification - will look into it.

Interesting to see the #lobbying at play around EU proposals for screening messages on encrypted chat services #e2ee #Chatcontrol #OnlineSafetyAct @signalapp @WhatsApp @element_hq
Patrick Breyer #JoinMastodon@echo_pbreyer

🇬🇧EU ombudswoman on #chatcontrol: EU Commission must not hide a list of experts whose group helped undermine secure #E2EE encryption. iccl.ie/news/ombudsman… Here's the secret list - lots of tech, lots of law enforcement, hardly any EU experts: patrick-breyer.de/wp-content/upl…
