In 1966, Fr Des Wilson, radical, restless and impossible to contain, was sent to the parish of Ballymurphy in west Belfast, in what many believed was an attempt to tame a troublesome cleric. Instead, the move would shape a lifetime of activism that left a deep mark on one of Belfast’s most deprived communities.
Now, a quarter of a century after it first captivated audiences, the powerful play Des, is being brought back to the stage in the community where the legacy of Fr Wilson, who died in 2019 aged 94, still resonates.
