Something I’ve noticed about the vocal audience on here is that they operate off of basic enemy/ally distinction. If it’s an “enemy”, aka someone in the protagonist’s way, it’s ok if the “hero” kills them. Because they’re the hero! They have their reasons. If they’re with the “hero”, then they’re an ally and anything that happens to them is a tragedy to be focused on. People are gonna argue that Eleven here is justified because these men were part of the military, which experimented on her, and they were in her way, so ergo, it’s ok for her to kill them because she deserves that catharsis. The military are the bad guys, so it’s ok, it’s fine, don’t think about it, this is storytelling. However, if any of Eleven’s friends were to be killed in this manner, completely overwhelmed while they were getting in the way of someone else, then it’ll be a travesty and “too brutal”. “It’s not that deep, bruh.” This is more addressing a wider issue with how people miss any sort of nuance whatsoever. It’s why if a hero has a “no kill” or “minimize death” rule there is an increasing amount of people that just go “why shouldn’t these people die? They’re the enemy!” Because media has allowed things to degrade to such a manner. If she has the power to so effortlessly snap their necks and also make a guy shoot himself, she could have just as easily knocked them out. This indicates a level of nuance to her portrayal to where she is conscious of all life, not just those with her. I am also aware that they were trying to kidnap her and what was happening with the pregnant women. Even then, she had the drop on them, she could have shown restraint for the higher ideal of a heroic figure. Were they active shooting her in this scene and she had to put them down? Completely fair, but these basic portrayals do a lot in shaping the overall morality of the characters we see. Especially when we get takes like this who just go “wooo yeah! This is so satisfying!” As the “hero” demonstrates no restraint and just kills people in her way. If I was going to write this scene to make Eleven not come off as so careless about life, I would have had the soldiers actively shooting at her as she takes cover/stop the bullets so she is forced to used lethal force to defend herself. This doesn’t change the outcome, but now it changes the portrayal. Everyone gets a more nuanced portrayal, and people can still clap like seals. I again await everyone telling me that I’m thinking too much about this and I should just shut my brain off to enjoy things.
