@skdh What even is AGI. Reminds me of how we can’t even define consciousness or god, yet we discuss them as if they are well defined concepts. Language has a tendency to make us all hallucinate things that don’t exist. Just becuase we can combine words, doesn’t make it a thing.

How is it even news that LLMs won't get us to AGI, reasoning or not. I thought we'd settled this last year.

@friedberg If you think there’s opportunity on mars, then you’re quite delusional. The Earth is just beginning. Too bad that irrational fear is currently blinding the leaders of the world into thinking that we live in a resource scarce time. No … we just live in a lazy time.

Oil giant BP abandons (yet another) target to reduce oil and gas production and instead makes new investments in the Middle East and the Gulf of Mexico to boost its oil and gas output.

@ChShersh They are surprised not because it’s Haskell, but because it is you who is claiming this skill.

I dunno why but I’m extremely weirded out by questions like “Can you really write a web backend in Haskell?” Bro, it’s a general purpose language. What do you think it’s for, brewing coconut latte??? 😭

@ThePrimeagen Well who is going to test the mock 🫣… I feel it to. In fact I would go so far as to say that most testing is over engineered, and at the same time, there is never enough tests. We need more asserts, better compilers like rustc. And above all else, better developers.

No code editor does everything, you always have to compromise on something. But many people compromise on the wrong thing. They think they want all the fancy features and end up sacrificing flow. But being in the zone is more important than anything else. If you're constantly waiting for your editor, if you can't trust whether a feature will work, if you feel like you're constantly fighting your editor, then you'll be breaking your flow and it'll be hard to stay focused. The most important thing is that the editor doesn't get in the way. Programming doesn't happen in your editor, it happens in your mind. Be aware of anything that disrupts the mental process.

Docker is stupid. “Sorry, we can’t deploy a single statically linked executable of size 10 MB, so LET’S JUST SHIP GIGABYTES OF DATA CONTAINING AN ENTIRE OS WITH ALL DEPENDENCIES FOR EVERY SINGLE SERVICE”

@kr_saurabh_952 @laiout_co Great! Very nice portfolio! How comfortable are you with Terraform and AWS? Do you have any experience as a tester? Both manual hands on testing as well as automated testing is a bonus.

@Lucretiel Yes. 100% However there is such a thing as overusing it too. I’ve seen some nasty chains of iterators in rust that could have been written much simpler with a for loop. And vice versa a dangerous for loop that could have been just two chained calls on iterators. Multi faceted.

@ThePrimeagen @lexfridman Yes 100%. I have wasted more time using chat gpt than I have saved. These tools are counterproductive if one is doing something remotely complex in a codebase that is older than two years.

I'm doing a podcast with the Cursor team. If you have questions / feature requests to discuss (including super-technical topics) let me know! For those not familiar, Cursor is a code editor based on VSCode that adds a lot of powerful features for AI-assisted coding. I've been using Cursor and love it, so I thought why not talk to the team. The founders are a bunch of brilliant folks from MIT. This conversation will be bigger than just about Cursor, but more generally about the future of programming with AI.

@MD_VanNostrand @FreyaHolmer Maybe another thing that would be useful is to read up on the concept of a scene graph and how objects are positioned in world space. By use of regular 4 x 4 matrices.

@MD_VanNostrand @FreyaHolmer If it helps, use an axes helper or something to visualise what the x y and the z axes look like for your local coordinate system. This is readily available in both three.js and Babylon. But if you’re using Unity or some high level nonsense I can’t help you.
