Great read David! The safety vs. control distinction is one more people should be talking about. Restricting access and making models safer aren't necessarily the same problem, and treating them like they are can have some pretty unintended consequences. I personally think this is why open source matters. If only a few companies can touch frontier models, we lose thousands of researchers, students, and builders finding bugs, improving alignment, and pushing the field forward. More engineers stress-testing, red-teaming, and breaking models seems like a much faster path to safer AI than concentrating access to a handful of organizations :)

Two weeks ago I spent a Friday using Fable to write custom NVFP4 GEMMs on my DGX Spark, getting closer than I ever had to training a capable model from scratch at home, which normally needs a lab. I stepped away to eat. By the time I got back, the government had banned Fable.
